Football friends of the late Phil Yates, representing Tenby and Kilgetty, played in the second MIND charity football match organised by Alison Yates on Bank Holiday Monday at Kingsmoor Sports Club, Kilgetty.

It was end to end playing, with all the players defending and attacking well. Tenby were always that bit ahead, managing to be one goal in front. Kilgetty had many chances, as did Tenby too.

Lots of players and supporters turned up to remember Phil and support his Mum, Alison, in raising funds for the mental health charity MIND. MIND representatives also attended and were very grateful for the amazing support.

Philip (Phil) Yates passed away on August 14, 2015, due to depression and had only been ill for a very short time. Alison hopes that the funds raised for MIND will help others to get the help they need.

MIND Pembrokeshire’s office is in Hafordia House, Winch Lane, Haverfordwest. They open daily from 10 am and people are welcome to call in for a chat or to seek help and support, no appointment is necessary. Activities, mental health training, counselling sessions and support in many other areas are also available. For information, call: 01437 769982.

Phil loved playing football and was part of both Tenby and Kilgetty football clubs in his younger years.

Phil’s mum Alison said: “I would like to thank all the supporters of the charity football match for Pembrokeshire MIND in memory of my late son Phil for making the afternoon so successful. The amount raised to date is £805, with donations still coming in.”

The game’s final result was Tenby 4 Kilgetty 3, but the real winners were Alison, the teams and all involved.

Alison shared: “Thank you to all the businesses and people who donated to our grand raffle, Wisebuys for the players half-time oranges and The Argosy for the bottled water, Neil Lewis for taking photos continually throughout and after the match, Lukas Gamble and Louise, Bryn and Kingsmoor Sport and Social Club for their continued help and letting us hold the event at the club, Sharron of the Fair Trade In Football Campaign for sponsoring the Fairtrade football via WCVA grant funding and finally to John Couceiro of Penfro Peche and Richard Roberts of Tenby Glass for sponsoring the new football shirts and kit. Lastly, thank you to my family, friends and helpers for their never ending help and support.”

An upcoming auction is to be held for the signed Fairtrade football with Ashley Williams, Joe Allen, Sam Vokes and Nathan Jones (Wales Championship manager) signatures; thanks to Stoke City media manager Colin Burgess for organising the signatures with the Fair Trade In Football Campaign.

“A final big ‘thank you’ to all the players who gave us an entertaining and well played match; without you all, this event wouldn’t be possible and the commitment you all make is always very much appreciated by myself and my family. Thanks too to the referee Stuart Allen,” said Alison.

“Please can you give a little to this worthwhile cause on our Just Giving page - we couldn’t save my son, but perhaps we can save others.” Alison concluded.

The Just Giving page is still open should anyone wish to donate to Pembrokeshire MIND: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/alison-yates16
