Flower power reigns
Saundersfoot Bowling Club was full on Friday for a social night with a difference.
The event was organised to celebrate a gardening competition which has been run for the first time this year.
Brainchild of life member Brian Deeley, who has for many years kindly looked after the green surrounds and hanging baskets, the contest has certainly proved successful, with the club looking blooming marvellous this season.
The surrounds of the green were each divided into sections earlier in the year, with members signing up to look after each one.
Brian and club president Ann Lewis kindly donated a cut glass trophy for the winners and Madeline Brace, whose late husband Alan, who was also a stalwart member and hard worker around the green, having the difficult job of judging.
After much deliberation, Madeline, who presented the trophy and prizes with Brian, chose the plot looked after by Christine and Dennis Ball as the first winners. Second were Pam and Rod Bowen and third Bob Storey.
The prize-winners all received gardening-themed gifts, as well as beautiful floral arrangements for the ladies.
In announcing the winners, Brian thanked all the members and friends involved, commenting that gardening and bowls often go hand in hand as you are always looking forward to the next season - how right he is!
The whole evening was a happy occasion, with bingo called by Billy Glynn, entertainment by Mike Carr and a Mr. and Mrs. contest with Graham and Alwen Hughes - all with a gardening theme. A delicious buffet and raffle rounded off the festivities.
Club chairman Myrddin Dennis thanked everyone involved in organising the evening and those for attending to make it a success.
SAUNDERSFOOT 75 (4 pts.) TENBY 81.25 (10)
Saundersfoot played host to near neighbours Tenby last Saturday in a Pembrokeshire League Division One top of the table clash.
This was the third time that the sides had met this season, including a cup match, and each had gone down to the wire, with this game being no exception with the sides sitting second and third in the league.
At the halfway point, the visitors held a healthy 14-shot lead, which by the 18th end had been reduced to just five.
Unfortunately for the villagers, however, the end result was again a narrow defeat by 6.25 shots.
Rink scores, with Saundersfoot first and Tenby skips only, were:
Roy Kennion, Mackie Brace, Brian Desmond, Joe Dennis 19; Kieran Peregrine 26.

The St. Brides rink that played was Paul Sneyd, Ken James, Brian Dooley and Peter Guyett.
