A doctor from Withybush Hospital has been helping to encourage others to apply for roles within the hospital.

Dr. Richard Gilpin, a core trainee in general medicine and gastroenterology, recently featured in a short recruitment promotional film made by Hywel Dda UHB to help attract staff to its acute hospital in Pembrokeshire.

The 32-year-old medic, originally from Kingston-Upon-Thames, now lives with his partner, who is a pharmacist, in Druidston along the spectacular St. Brides Bay.

Dr. Gilpin, who began life in the NHS over 10 years ago, began his medical training in Leicester, before moving to Bristol for his foundation training.

Choosing Pembrokeshire as the base for his core training was a natural choice for Dr. Gilpin: “The reason I chose to continue my training in Wales was because of the size of the hospital; as it’s smaller than a city hospital, I’ve benefited from being able to see lots of different procedures, rather than specialising in one particular area.

“Withybush’s strong point is its size as trainees have good access to consultants and exposure to unselected medical intake. The facilities here are excellent and the clinical team are incredibly supportive, they have a lot of time for trainees and provide an open and trusting environment in which to work.

“I’m also passionate about the outdoors so living in such a beautiful place provides me with freedom, space and a great quality of life.

“In my spare time, I go rock climbing, fishing and walking. I also enjoy foraging for wild food, something which is in abundance in Pembrokeshire.”
