Sir,

Dyfed Powys Police Commissioner Christopher Salmon has been accused of driving a vehicle with defective tyres. That in itself is a serious accusation, and it will doubtless follow the due process of the law.

But there is another question. He was driving a police vehicle. Mr. Salmon is paid £65,000 a year, plenty to run a car for his work, and he is entitled to claim mileage. So why does he needed to be provided with a BMW by the police force with blue lights and a siren, even though he is not qualified to use them?

Quite simply this is a perk of public office that should be scrapped immediately. What reason can there be for an elected official on a good salary to be provided with a vehicle paid for by the police service to go about his duties? He is paid a mileage allowance and that should be sufficient.

Richard Church,

Liberal Democrat candidate for Dyfed Powys Police and Crime Commissioner.
