A Saundersfoot fundraiser hoping to take part in the London Marathon to raise money for Cancer Research in memory of her dad, has finally booked her slot at the event.
Gemma Clewer, of Cambrian Terrace, started applying for a ballot place for the London Marathon in 2008 when her father was first diagnosed with cancer, and has applied every year since.
A ballot place means that you are not tied to the amount you have to raise for charity to take part, therefore not under any added pressure of raising a fixed amount to go alongside training for the race.
"Whilst my dad was going through his treatment, he never once complained, nor did he give into his illness, he stayed strong and determined," said Gemma.
"I have so much admiration for the way he fought. Unfortunately, dad lost his battle with cancer in 2011.
"This year I finally secured a place for the marathon by entering a photo competition!
"Although I must have looked very odd balancing on my dad's bench at 7 am on a cold October morning, it was worth it to win a place! I will run the marathon in his memory and I am hoping I will have some of his determination to get me through the 26.2 miles on race day!
"So many of us are affected by cancer these days, whether it be a friend, relative or work colleague, someone we know is fighting a battle with cancer, some are victorious and win the battle, sadly some lose.
"Hopefully, by raising as much money as we can to put into Cancer Research many more may win in their battle in the future," added Gemma, who will take on the challenge on April 26.
