St. Clears Juvenile Sports Association held the inaugural World Alternative Games Go West last Saturday. The games were played in the 'Corinthian Spirit' espoused by the World Alternative Games in Llanwrtyd Wells, that is, it's the taking part and having fun that counts, more than the winning. Medals were therefore awarded to all who took part as well as gold, silver and bronze medals being awarded to winners of individual events. There were exciting finishes in the Dizzy Challenge and Sandbag Quoits in which competitors had to have extra time to compete for gold medals. The Dizzy Challenge senior gold medal was finally awarded to Debbie Bates, and Sandbag Quoits victory went to Keith Hopkins. Other event champions were: Beili Chase - Macey Bowen (junior), Arwel John (men's senior), Lowri Howells (female senior); Sheepdog Trial - Sonia Jones and Macey Bowen (open category); Dizzy Challenge - Debbie Bates (senior), Sonia Jones (junior); Sandbag Quoits - Keith Hopkins (senior), Emily Bowen (junior); Caber (Well, fence post) Toss - Arwel John (senior), Sonia Jones (junior); Bung The Boar - Steffan Jenkins (senior), Sonia Jones (junior); Finger Jousting was won by Taylor Walters. There will be a similar event in Whitland at the start of Whitland Week on Sunday, July 27. This will be combined with an exhibition strength event. When asked about the success of the games so far, events and projects co-ordinator for St. Clears and Whitland, Helen Williams, said: "The Games in St. Clears were really enjoyed by all who were there... we were struck by the smiles on everyone's faces from start to finish. I'm looking forward now to the event in Whitland where we'll repeat some of the games, but introduce some new ones as well. "The Air Cadets in Whitland have kindly agreed to help create and marshal an assault course for us so that should be great fun for everyone to try. We're also excited to have real quoits there, so people can try their hand at this traditional, but also quirky, event."
