Spring has arrived and as the warmer weather and lighter evenings gladden our hearts, Narberth Museum has a full programme of events to engage our minds too!
On Thursday, April 25 at 7.30pm, Terry John will be giving a talk on Tudor Women.
This talk will explore the role of women at all levels of Tudor society including the aristocracy, the merchant classes and the peasantry
Tickets are £5 and refreshments are available.
On Saturday, April 27, the Museum is joining with Pippa Davies to hold a Poetry Writing Workshop.
“Poetry and heritage meet as the Women of West Wales inspire you to write your own poetry”. This free workshop will take place at the Cottage Inn, Llangwm and is open to all. To book a place and for more details, contact [email protected]
Another workshop, this time for lino-printing, will be led by Diana Brook at the Museum on Saturday, May 11.
The theme is ‘In Her Shoes: Women’s Shoes Through Time’.
Those wanting to join in can drop in between 10.30 am and 4 pm. The cost is £10 and all materials are provided.
On Wednesday, May 15 at 7.30 pm, Angela V. John will be giving a talk on Welsh novelist and translator Menna Gallie (1919–1990).
Menna Humphreys was born in Ystradgynlais, and attended Swansea University, where she met her future husband, the philosopher W. B. Gallie. Together, they were politically active, with a commitment to democratic socialism.
She has been described as ‘a sort of Welsh Edna O’Brien, (who) writes beady-eyed, bawdy-tongued entertainments calculated to stir recognition in women and discomfiture in men…’
Angela V. John is a Professor of History who sees herself as ‘a biographical historian, writing about the period alongside the person’. She has written widely on women’s employment in Victorian Britain and gender history and suffrage
Tickets are £5 and refreshments are available.
As part of National Crime Reading Month, the Museum bookshop, Chapter One has invited author Alice Hawkins to join us to discuss her new book ‘In Two Minds’, the second in the ‘Teifi Valley Coroner’ series.
Admission to the event to be held on May 29 at 7.30 pm is £5 but this is redeemable against the cost of the book. Wine will be available in the newly-licensed coffee shop!
These events forms part of the #WOWW project that celebrates the achievements of the Women of West Wales. This is supported by PLANED, Arwain Sir Benfro and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Tickets can be purchased online at www.narberthmuseum.co.uk
Finally, Sandra Benham, the museum’s research volunteer writes: “Most of us are unaware that our own lives are an important part of the history of our community and that we have in our possession photographs which paint a vivid picture of events and experiences we have enjoyed.
“Narberth Museum in Church Street is planning to stage an exhibition which it is hoped will show Narberth in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, set against a background of the music, fashion, décor, pastimes etc. of the period.
“The Museum is asking that Narberthians search out any photos showing how we were dressing and playing, LPs, tapes or CDs, and household items which haven’t yet made it to the charity shop.
“Anything from sewing and knitting patterns to early computers. These will all be returned at the end of the exhibition.
“Local antique and collectable shops have already lent some items and we look forward to seeing personal photos and perhaps even a few keepsakes.
“Contact us about this or anything else at [email protected] or ring 01834 860500.”
