There will be changes to some waste and recycling collections in Pembrokeshire over Christmas and New Year.

Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on a Friday this year and there will be no collections on these dates.

If your usual collection falls on Friday, December 25 it will be moved to Sunday, December 27.

If your usual collection falls on Friday, January 1 it will be moved to Sunday, January 3.

This will be the case whether that collection is for Recycling or Residual Grey Bag collections. There will be no change to what is taken on those days.

Residents are reminded to please place bags/boxes out by 6.30 am to ensure collection.

To help with the extra residual waste during this festive period, households can present ONE extra bag at the kerbside on their first collection of non-recyclable grey bag waste after December 25.

The bag does not need to be a PCC grey bag, but any residual bag provided by the household. However, please do not use PCC recycling bags i.e. AHP purple bags or Orange recycling bags.

The date of this collection is shown on your online kerbside collection calendar

You can sign up to the free text/email collection notifications via My Account.

Residents are asked to please remember to recycle as much as you can during the festive period.

Below is a list of what can be recycled in each of the kerbside sort containers:

• Blue Reusable Sack – Cardboard and Card including delivery boxes and brown packaging/wrapping paper and Christmas cards without glitter, foil embossing or any other embossing on them (no bows, ribbons etc).

• Blue Box – Paper including newspapers and magazines, leaflets, envelopes and paper based wrapping paper which meets the “’scrunch test” (paper which bounces back after it is scrunched in a ball. Foil based paper or wrapping paper with glitter on is not recyclable and should be placed in your grey residual bags).

• Red Reusable Sack – Plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays (excluding black and brown plastic pots, tubs and trays), food and beverage cartons and metal packaging including cans, tins, empty aerosols, foil and foil trays. Your plastic sweet/ chocolate tubs and metal biscuit tins are also recyclable through the red bag.

• Green Caddy – Food Waste – including peelings, turkey carcasses and any Christmas left overs.  But why not turn any leftover food into a wonderful dish, like a curry or pie?

• Green Box – Glass Bottles and Jars – including wine, beer and spirit bottles, sauce jars and non food bottles such as empty perfume bottles.

• Household-provided clear bag – Household Batteries

Carmarthenshire Christmas bin collections

Householders in Carmarthenshire are being reminded that there are changes to bins over the festive period – but only for those with Friday collections.

Bins due to be collected on Friday, December 25 (Christmas Day) will be collected on Sunday, December 27. Bins due on Friday, January 1 (New Year’s Day) will be collected on Saturday, January 2. All other days are as normal.

Please put your bins out the night before as collections may take place earlier than usual.

Remember, the maximum number of black bags you can put out for collection is three a fortnight, so please recycle as much as possible in your blue bags and food waste bins.

Blue bags should be used to recycle all your plastic bottles, cans and foil (such as mince pie cases), cardboard packaging, wrapping paper and Christmas cards.

Christmas food waste - including your turkey bones - should go in your green food bins, which are collected weekly.

Glass bottles and jars can be recycled at bottle banks and we’ve increased the bins at some of the busiest sites to help recycle all the extra glass produced over the festive season. Visit the recycling pages on the council website for locations – and please do not to leave any glass or other waste on the ground as you could get fined for fly-tipping!

Don’t forget there are also changes to recycling centre opening times over the festive period, all sites are closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day; and are open 8.30am to 12noon on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve (last appointments 11.30am). You can book an appointment on the website or call 01267 234567.

Please separate any recyclable items before you go - Christmas trees, electrical items and batteries can all be recycled.

Executive Board Member for the Environment Cllr Hazel Evans said: “We do tend to produce a lot more waste at this time of year, so it is important that we recycle as much as possible.

“Over the last few months with more of us spending time at home we have seen the county’s blue bag and food waste recycling figures increase by 28% which is remarkable. I would like to thank everyone for all their efforts to recycle during this time, and please keep it up over the Christmas period as it really does make a difference.”
