Junior training has now finished for the year and will restart next year in the early spring. Please keep your eyes peeled to this space for details. This is a very popular sail training event that is held by the club and is usually oversubscribed, so it is a first come first served basis.
There will be a Junior Christmas Party on Friday, December 7. All of this year’s sail training juniors, instructors, helpers and parents are welcome.
AGM
The annual general meeting of Tenby Sailing Club took place last Friday at the club.
Nathan Spiller, Commodore, opened the meeting and welcomed all who attended and after taking apologies and the review of the previous year’s minutes, gave the commodore’s address and yearly round up.
The financial report was read out and summarised by the treasurer, Sharon Thompson.
The election of the flag officers was then to take effect. The commodore Nathan Spiller remained in post as too does Lou Middleton as vice commodore. Blake Shaw, after being awarded honorary president, stepped down as rear commodore and the club welcomed Jo Musson in his place, ensuring continuity into the future.
The new list of flag officers and the 15 committee members will be on the website in due course.
Awards Given at the AGM
Honorary president: In recognition of services to the club and his never-ending energy and sometimes patience in being chief dinghy instructor, the committee wanted to recognise Blake Shaw who, believe it or not, is 80 years old next year to be made an honorary president of Tenby Sailing Club. This is in recognition of his many years serving as an active member of the club and committee and also that he was secretary for around 45 years.
He still does the reporting on sailing matters, RYA related items, an active member of the THU and also the bar committee. He is still very active in his sailing and winning trophies. He was also commodore for a year in 1969 and the youngest ever at the age of 28. It is not a flag officer position and will still allow Blake to do what he does best as chief instructor and be an active member of the committee.
Life membership: The committee sits and every now and again nominates someone from the club, whether on the committee or not, to become a life member. Last September it was suggested that Alistair MacKay should be put forward for life membership to recognise all the hard work he did whilst serving on the committee, and as dinghy bosun, which is a job that he still does impeccably. He keeps the dinghies in tip-top condition, applies for grants that allow members to do various courses, plus other grants to replace tired old dinghies. He also really enjoys spending the grant money.
Congratulations goes out to Blake and Alistair.
Stepping down from the committee this year was ex commodore Roy Clayton and treasurer Anthea Evenden, along with Carwyn Owen. The commodore would like to thank them for the work they have done to make the club what it is and wish them well.
Other matters were then discussed and the full minutes will be sent out to the members in due course. The meeting was then closed by the commodore with a round-up of the festive season’s socials. The next AGM is planned for Saturday, November 16, 2019.
Commodore’s Quiz
The last Commodore’s Quiz for this year took place last Saturday. This was the grand final for the quiz league. All year we were raising money for the RNLI and as you know this is a very worthy cause.
The scores on the doors on the night were as follows: in first place were the Bo Ho’s, then in order X reading, Just Warming Up, Cola Clan, Dashers, The Losers, Four Amigos and last but not least the Lone Dogs.
As far as the quiz league goes, the winners and therefore Tenby Sailing Club quiz champions were the Cola Clan, then in order, Dashers, Four Amigos, The Losers and The Lone Dogs.
A big thank you goes out to those who attended and also the regular league players, also a big thank you to Claire at Molson Coors who kindly sponsored the night and was very generous in supplying the prizes for the league players. We have raised a brilliant £845 for the RNLI.
