Due to the fleet being away at their nationals last week no club racing took place, however a big congratulations goes out to all Tenby sailors from the committee and the membership as a whole as the club was well represented at the Osprey Nationals and at the RS 100 Nationals.
Five Tenby Ospreys set off last Wednesday to compete in the Osprey National Championship hosted by Weymouth Sailing Club. Jaime and Erik in "Back Again", Mike and Deanna in "Shameless", Ted and Lucas in "Best Chance", Carwyn and Huw in "Rhiannon" and Dan and guest crew Nick in "Jennifer".
All boats took to the water on Thursday for a ten race, four-day series. The sun shone periodically and the wind blew nonstop, sometimes excessively! As the contest unfolded a pattern emerged with Jennifer at the top of the Tenby boats achieving a very creditable 16th position in a fleet of 46 Ospreys.
The remaining Tenby contingent followed with Best Chance in 23rd, Shameless in 29th, Back Again in 37th and Rhiannon in 43rd. Carwyn and Huw in Rhiannon, the novices in the fleet attending their first Nationals, enjoyed the experience and were the only Tenby prize winners receiving the trophy for the loudest shirt and making many new friends in the Osprey fleet as a result!
Tenby’s contingent was one of the largest from any club and enjoyed a vigorous social program once the daily racing was complete, making the following early starts challenging!
On the last day racing was significantly delayed by 30 knot winds which didn`t abate until after lunch, by which time several boats had decided to head home, but not Team Jennifer who cemented her position as top Tenby crew, and well done to them. Meanwhile just down the road in Portland Jo became the First Lady at the RS100 European and National Championships.
There were three races every day with four on the last day. The weather as you can well imagine was very windy having the same strength as the Ospreys in Weymouth but Jo said that although she is exhausted she had a lot of fun.
Cruiser Racing
The race last Tuesday took place in a westerly force 3 to 4 but with a late tide the start was delayed until 1930. The course set was North High Cliff (NHC) to port and the Monkstone mark to port, this gave 2 nice reaches and a beat to finish. Steve in Aries pulled away on the reach to NHC mark with Billy and Tony in Apatshe, Blake in Slipstream and Phil in Accolade in close pursuit.
After Gybing at NHC another Reach saw no change in position with Accolade always in touch. Slipstream tacked out to try something different but the flood tide meant the others gained further ground on her leaving to much of a gap for Slipstream to catch up. In the end only seconds separated the fleet on handicap with Aries coming in first, Apatshe second, Accolade third and Slipstream in fourth.
Next race tomorrow (Saturday) at 5 pm with a further race on Tuesday at 6.30pm.
Junior Sailing
The winds were too strong last week to allow any on the water training. However, all youngsters were given onshore training to help complete their certificate work.
Hope to see all our sailors returning next week.
Helpers Party
As a big thank you to all the people who helped make this years Tenby Regatta and Scorpions Nationals a great success, there will be a Bangers and Mash helper’s party at the club on Saturday 15th Sept from 1900.
