Try Sailing
On Sunday, May 21, the club will be taking part in the RYA ‘Push the Boat Out’ scheme, offering anyone who wants a go at sailing the chance to have a go in club boats with experienced helms; for those with some experience perhaps in a single-hander, for others maybe a cruiser or club rib.
If you would like to have a go, please contact Ted Lewis on [email protected] to book your place.
Club Sailing
Despite sun and a mid range northerly, only three Ospreys and a Cherub participated in sailing last Saturday.
Carwyn and Huw in the Cherub, who are still coming to terms with their challenging craft, enjoyed some high speeds in a straight line, but turning was an issue, so they did not take part in the races.
First race was triangular with an up wind start off St. Catherine’s, across the bay towards Monkstone, then out to sea for a gybe mark in the east. On the first beat, Ted/Lucas reached the windward mark first, spinnaker up and away they went to take the win by some distance from Jaime/Griff, then Richard/Alastair.
The second race was windward leeward; this time racing was neck and neck between Ted/Lucas and Jaime/Griff, with the lead changing hands at the first leeward mark. At the finish, Ted/Lucas were about 20 yards ahead to take the win from Jaime/Griff, then Richard/Alastair.
Junior training
Although the tide was out, everyone welcomed the flat sea and good sailing conditions in the force 2-3 SW.
All groups were on the water, including the new racing section.
A few in the beginners group had some unplanned capsize practice, but most showed they were quite happy in the water.
However, with the sea temperature still low, it was decided to cut the sailing session short and give everyone a warm-up with a quick ride around the bay in a rib.
The usual BBQ food completed a very successful evening.
Cruiser racing
The first race of the season for the Harry Billing Cup is tomorrow (Saturday) starting at 7.15 pm. Not all the fleet is on the water as yet, but the race will be run for those that make it. If the race is postponed, the cup will be awarded at the next race sailed on May 6 at 2.30 pm.
Handicaps used have been amended depending on last season’s performance. We await the usual friendly banter.
Volunteers
needed
We are presently short of a club secretary. If you would like to help, please email Ted Lewis on [email protected]
Summer Sailing
Club races will take place Tuesday evenings (once it’s light enough) and Saturday late afternoon.
The season has already started and will continue every Saturday at 5 pm.
Junior sailing will be on Wednesday evenings.
Cup races will be the first Saturday in the month when there will be three short races in a mini series for that month’s cup.
The club championship will remain over all races from April to end September.
There will be early, mid and late series as the summer progresses.
The Club Regatta and Round Caldey Island race are scheduled for June 24 and 25, and the club will be running the National Championship of the RS200 class of dinghy from Saturday, August 26 to Thursday, August 31.
Volunteers will be needed to help with both events, both on and off the water. In particular, the RS200 Nationals will be the biggest event hosted by the club in 10 years, with over 100 double-handed boats expected. Please diarise now and register your intention/availability to help (no firm commitment required at this stage) by contacting our National Race Officer and TSC Nationals co-ordinator, Mark Dashfield, tel. 01834 844918 or email [email protected].
Some time during the summer a Cruise in Company may be organised to a local beach.
