Club Sailing

There was no sailing last Saturday or Tuesday as members recovered from a busy week on the water with the Firefly National Championship.

Firefly National Championships

This competition concluded on Friday after a splendid week on the water. Sailing took place every day in a range of conditions, supported by an active social programme on shore.

After a very close contest, the honours were taken by Stuart Hudson and Jane Hudson from Keyhaven Sailing Club, after much place changing during the week; many congratulations to them.

Competitors and their families were very complimentary of their week in Tenby, both on and off the water, and are keen to return as soon as possible.

Running an event like this is a massive effort for a small club involving a dozen or more people in club ribs, another half dozen in the committee boat, more on shore and in the clubhouse, and all volunteer their time willingly. A great thank you to all involved, particularly Nationals co-ordinator, Mark Dashfield.

Osprey National Championship

This event took place at Mumbles Yacht Club over last weekend. Two boats from Tenby entered and both achieved mid-fleet positions in a challenging top class fleet.

Cruiser race

There was an excellent turnout of six boats for last Saturday’s race, which took place in perfect conditions.  Blake set a course around Giltar and North High Cliff buoys.

All boats were together at the Skers, with a close reach down to Giltar buoy. Tejeda pulled away, closely followed by Aries. It was nice to see Crispin Squibbs joining in in Beagle. Slipstream hoisted a spinnaker on the run back to NHC and slowly caught up the leaders. However, Denny Young in Heather was never far behind and in contention on handicap.

The wind kept heading the fleet on the leg back to Tenby and everyone was waiting for the first boat to tack. Steve Lewis in Aries and Heather got it spot on by continuing inshore before tacking and benefited from extra wind from Waterwynch.

Final result was Heather first, Beagle, Aries, Tejeda (John Griffiths), Slipstream (Blake), Accolade (Phil Rees).

Let’s hope for an even bigger entry on the following Saturdays.
