Club Sailing
Saturday was grey, wet and windy and sailing was cancelled.
On Tuesday evening, in warm and sunny conditions, six boats contested the evening race run by Bill Dowell. Proceedings were dominated by the three Ospreys of Ted/Lucas, Jaime/Griff and Dyfan with his novice crew. They finished in that order, with Martin in a club Laser, the Owen brothers in a 420 and Igor in a Topper all enjoying a pleasant evening on, and in some cases, in the water. The shifty gusty north-westerly providing all with some fast and challenging sailing.
Junior training
Junior training will continue on Wednesday evenings starting 5 pm throughout the school holidays, with the exception of Wednesday, August 10, as Tenby SC is staging the Firefly National Championships from August 6 - 12. Around 70 dinghies will be visiting us for daily racing.
However, it need not be a week off sailing. We will be running five safety boats every day and a committee boat to start and finish the races. On shore car park management, safety tallies checked etc. etc.
Anyone wishing to volunteer to help in any way, please contact me or Ted Lewis on [email protected]
Beginners Group
Most of the group have completed Stage 1 and are well on their way through Stage 2.
Please make an effort to turn up even if it looks like being too windy for sailing. Only half the group came down recently on a wet night and missed some of the necessary shore work which will have to be repeated for them.
Five of our youngsters progressed to Assistant Instructor status recently which is a fine achievement. It also means our regular instructors can benefit from expert help on training nights.
We provide training from RYA Stage 1 to 4, Advanced Sailing, Power Boat 1 and 2, First Aid and Instructor training. We are also keen on introducing youngsters to try racing and hopefully join in the club racing nights onTuesday and Saturday.
All this is done by volunteers and we would like to thank everyone who helps in any way.
TSC Sea Swimming section
Four swimmers (Fin Bowie, Owen Thomas, Billy Kinnear and Katie Hicks, pictured above) from Tenby Sailing Club’s new Junior Open Water Swim Team impressed last weekend at the Long Course Weekend in Tenby.
On Friday evening all four swam in the 1.2 mile open water event, with Owen taking first place overall in 29 minutes and Katie taking first female place in 32 minutes.
There was a slight hiccup for Fin when he was sent back to the water by the marshals to complete a second lap (obviously looked too fresh coming out of the water first time round!) which lost him a chance of a podium finish and a number of minutes, but all four swimmers completed in top 11 and under 35 minutes.
Owen, Fin and Billy went on to complete the rest of the Junior Long Course Weekend, with Fin taking first place and Billy taking second place on the 42-mile bike section in some challenging weather on the Saturday. Then on the Sunday they completed the 10K run from Manorbier to Tenby that resulted in a Junior Long Course win for Fin, taking first place overall and Billy taking third.
The coaches (Sarah, Karen and Tracey) would like to congratulate these four on their efforts over the last weekend and in the open water skills training programme, but also say a big thank you to their parents who unconditionally support these young athletes during good times and bad and the people of Pembrokeshire for the massive support shown during this amazing opportunity.
Cruiser racing
Although a couple of boats ventured out last Sunday, it was too rough to continue. Next race tomorrow (Saturday), start 3 pm. Then Friday, July 22, start 7 pm.
Club Opening
This weekend sees the start of every day opening at the club. Yanni, of Caffe Vista, will be offering food at lunch and evening, and the bar will be open. Why not visit the club and enjoy a drink and a meal in the best venue in town?
