Sailing

Saturday was bright and sunny with a brisk shifty and gusty northerly breeze blowing off the cliffs for the two club races run by Mike Stace.

Only three boats braved the conditions and the particularly low temperature; Dan in his RS600, Ted/Lucas and Jaime/Griff in Ospreys. They all quickly doubted their decision to sail, as all three boats capsized before the start!

Mike set a starboard triangular course for the first race with the start off St. Catherines, upwind towards Waterwynch, then out to the gybe and back. Ted/Lucas started first and chose the inshore route on the beat to escape the worst of the outgoing tide; this did not pay and Dan in the RS600 went out to sea into stronger winds and took a commanding lead which he retained to the end, followed by Ted/Lucas, then Jaime/Griff.

In the second windward leeward race, the wind declined somewhat and the gusts lost their menace. The Ospreys’ large spinnaker came into its own on the downwind runs and after three enjoyable laps it was Ted/Lucas who took the honours on corrected time from Dan then Jaime/Griff.

For all those who would like to have a go at sailing, but don’t know where to start, the club will be running taster sessions in its annual ‘come and try’ event on Sunday, May 15, run in conjunction with the RYA ‘Push the Boat Out’ event. There will be the opportunity for anyone wanting to have a go, to be taken out in dinghies, ribs or cruisers. This will be free for non-members as well as members. Plenty of time to think about it and for the weather to warm up. Further information from Blake on 07717842713.

There will also be the opportunity for any adults wanting to learn to sail to have a go on Wednesday evenings by arrangement. Come down to the club on a Wednesday evening if interested.

Junior training

Twenty-four youngsters on the water last week and for once a gentle suitable breeze even for the beginners. A worthwhile training session, with the usual BBQ afterwards.

For further information if you would like to join the training, please ring Blake on 07717842713. We try to cater for all stages of dinghy sailing from beginners to racers.
