Tenby and District Pool League’s annual Finals Night got underway with Doubles Cup final, which saw Tony Thomas and Rob Day (Kilgetty Buffs Club) up against Mike Dobbs and Matthew James.
Mike and Matthew got off to a very good start, playing some outstanding pool and taking an early 2-0 lead. They then went off the boil a little as they lost the next three frames, before Matthew produced a nice clean up to level things at 3-3.
In a very nervy last frame decider, it was Tony and Rob who eventually prevailed, to win a first doubles title after 15 years of trying.
The Captains Cup was next, with last year’s finalist, Steffan Hopley (Swan Lake), taking on Tony Thomas. With both players potting well, it was Tony who took an early 2-0 advantage, before Steffan hit back with a frame of his own. His joy was shortlived, though, as Tony responded by taking the next two to win his third Captains Cup.
Tony Thomas also featured in the next final, the Triples Shield, where he again teamed up with Adam Joseph and Rob Day to defend their title against Cheynne Lloyd, Neil Harty and Rhys from Tenby Bowling Club.
The Buffs Club trio made an impressive start, racing into a 4-0 lead, before the Bowling Club team got a foothold in the final with a frame of their own. The defending champions were just too strong, though, and took the next to retain the shield for a second season in a row.
Next up were two very impressive Under 21 Cup players, Kai Furlong (Swan Lake) v Cian Williams (Greenbridge). All matches were very close, but it was Cian who eventually ran out winner 3-0 to hold the trophy for the first time.
The Team Knockout final featured the Greenbridge and the Three Mariners. This turned out to be another nail-biter, going to a final frame decider, with the Greenbridge taking it to win their first Team Knockout trophy.
Final ‘final’ was the blue riband event of the night, the Singles Cup, with John Grover (Swan Lake) taking on Marc Thomas in the best of seven frames contest.
John was making his second final appearance... amazingly, 38 years after his first, and was looking for his first singles title, while Marc was looking for this third.
It was John who started the better, taking the first frame, but that was as good as it got for him as Marc took command, taking the next for frames in a row to clinch a comfortable 4-1 victory.
The Tenby and District Pool League would like to thank Tenby Observer for publishing its results and reports throughout the winter, Melanie and Mark for hosting an amazing Finals Night at the Kilgetty Buffs Club, Haverfordwest Coin Machines for supplying the pool tables, all players and all supporters who turned up on the night and made the Finals Night so special!
