ACTIVItY WALES NOVEMBER CHALLENGE
Saturday, November 25, saw the last day of this unique event. Runners had two options how they could complete it.
Option one: ‘The 30 day one mile challenge’ which promoted the introduction of the sport to adults and school children to run to work, school or around their area. Tracey Thomas and her son Lloyd, Ava and Amber Johns and Eddie and Teaghan Waring took up this challenge.
Option 2: ‘The Extra Mile Challenge - The Beast’. This was a challenge to run one additional mile per day during November on the roads, park or a treadmill. The total mileage being 465 miles - Tenby to Dundee!! The aim was to raise as much as possible for two charites, CALM, who offer support to men in the UK of any age, who are down or in a crisis via their helpline, webchat or website, and Challenge Aid, which aims to build its own school in one of the largest slums in Kenya. Schools of Hope help children educate and ultimately escape a life of poverty.
We had Billy Connor and Dave Gosling take up this challenge, running before, during and after work - their dedication throughout was amazing, venturing out in all weathers. A few Aces joined them at different stages in training, who were great company for the boys and lots of encouragement given from members via Facebook was much appreciated.
Dave sadly lost his Dad in September this year and had decided to run in honour of him and raise awareness and funds for the DPJ Foundation. The DPJ Foundation was set up in July 2016 following the death of Daniel Picton-Jones. The foundation aims to support people in rural communities with poor mental health, especially men in the agricultural sector. Agriculture carries one of the highest rates of suicide and, with mental health being such a big problem across society, the foundation aims to break down the stigma that surrounds mental health and provide support services for those in rural communities. Dave’s just giving page is still open for donations, please go to www.justgiving.com/fundraising/david-gosling5.
You could also just join in the fun on the final day and we had six members sign up and join them for the full 30 miles - Mandy Draper, Lisa Watkins, Will Lewis, Dave Kent, Kim Harland and Carlton Coates.
We also congratulate the following for also joining in to run along with the main group at varying distances - Kes Aleknavicious 23 miles, Rhys Thomas 21 miles Stephanie Waring, Sophie Thomas, Iain Rich Ceris Hewlings, Lewis Poole, Paul Slack 13 miles, Ceire Merrison nine miles, David Poole, Ethan Poole, Tracey Thomas and Lloyd Thomas eight miles, Gareth ‘Mr. President’ Rees and Alex Rees four miles, Lauren Johns with daughters Ava and Amber, Gary Waring with son Eddie, daughter Teaghan and Mum Carol, Denise Cousins and Julie running the last miles from Stepaside to finish on Saundersfoot Harbour.
A very well done to Billy and Dave - we are very proud of our November Beasts and to all who took part and many thanks to those who ‘manned’ the six feed stations. As Kes exclaimed looking at the tables full of goodies, ‘looks like a wedding buffet’. Ann Rowell’s flapjacks were a hit andMandy Draper now knows she can run her marathons on pizza!
