The next two races of the series took place on this grey and cloudy Sunday afternoon.
With the season drawing to a close, after a slow departure from the harbour, six boats took to the water for the penultimate weekend of racing for this year. A course of Monkstone-Pendine-Amroth-Harbour was set and the five minute countdown began.
The wind was a F2-3 which made for some decent sailing conditions. Dave in the Contender took an early lead with the rest of the pack following closely behind. After one lap Steve decided to call it a day but the other boats went on to complete two laps each.
Unfortunately Jenny failed to hear the short course hooter so went through the line planning to continue with the race.
When the rescue team pointed out her error she failed to ‘unwind’ properly so was unfortunately disqualified missing out on a top position. Well done to Keith who took first place in his Laser, Sam and Iolo who were second in the Feva and Dave who was third in his Contender.
With a quick turn around Ed and Clare got the countdown started for the second race. With the slight increase in wind, cool conditions and shortened day Ed decided on an unusual course of Monkstone-Harbour to test the sailors.
They made a competitive start over the line but much confusion happened at the Monkstone mark when both Dave, and close behind, Jenny failed to realise that the green M meant a starboard direction around the mark.
A very galant Keith shouted to both sailors allowing them time to correct their mistakes but with three boats ducking and diving around the mark some close encounters were had!
The course continued to cause confusion when the Feva did the same thing back at the Harbour mark ending up having to do two circles of the buoy to correct their mistake.
A short but fun race was had with Jenny taking first place in the club Laser, followed by Keith and then Dave. Thank you to Ed and Clare on OOD and to John and Nina on rescue cover.
In other news the club held a quiz on Wednesday and £80 was collected for the RNLI, thanks goes to Jim for organising this.
On November 1 the club was very pleased to host the Welsh Minister Dafydd Elis-Thomas who was visiting Saundersfoot to admire the new harbour events decking and look at the phase 2 development plans for the harbour area.
These are exciting times for Saundersfoot which is fast becoming a 21st century resort!
Racing continues in a fortnight on Sunday, November 18 at 1pm. See you there for the final races of the year!
