After the bumper turnout of the previous weekend, several of our regular sailors were away at a rowing regatta in London, while the early start and high tide deterred a few others, however, a fleet of six set sail under the watchful eye of Tom Owen, assisted by Clare and Dave Hannan, with Keith and Terry in one safety boat and James and Dan in the second. The first leg was a beam reach to the Outfall buoy, followed by a broader leg to the relaid Monkstone buoy, then a faster and tighter reach to Pendine and then a good beat back to the harbour.
The two Contenders had a gripping race throughout as did Hywel and Ben in the Laser radial, and with the fleet enjoying several laps in a fresh breeze, the overall finishing positions were close, with Maurice pulling away from Simon to clinch his third win in a row as he seeks to defend his overall title from last year just ahead of one of this year’s leaders, Simon in the second Contender, while in third place was Ben.
Thanks to all of those on duty. Next weekend we have two races starting at 12.30.
As referred to above, a number of our regular sailors were away in the company of Wiseman’s Bridge rowers at the annual rowing regatta on The Thames, and from all accounts, a splendid weekend was had by all, plus taking in some of the sights of London at the same time, so well done to everyone who took part.
Our sail training programme has been producing great results again this year under the supervision of Jo and Malcolm, plus all the regular helpers with quite a few through joining in our Sunday races. One of our most recent trainees, Thomas Beaver has just completed his stage one and two and travelled to Llangorse to take part in a regatta there and we are pleased to say that Thomas came in first in the Topper 4.2 section so well done Thomas.
In two weeks time, we will be holding our event for Bart’s Bash, a worldwide event which has raised money for the Andrew Simpson Foundation. We have always had a great turnout for this as acknowledged by Bart’s Bash themselves again recently, and at this stage, we are still leading the world rankings for participants so make sure you come along and join in what is going to be a great day for all forms of craft be they dinghies, cruisers or rowing boats, organised this year by our youngsters with the main race starting at17.30 on Saturday, September 17, followed by a barbecue and fundraising evening in the clubhouse.
