No racing this week due to a bay engulfed in thick fog and choppy seas - it was great though to see so many sailors who actually turned up knowing possibly full well that ‘The Peoples Friend’ our enthusiastic Phantom sailor from up on the cliff was going to give the day’s proceedings the thumbs down.
An early return home for some and maybe the Sunday roast and the local ’paper to catch up on all Bank Holiday excitement. This of course was not the case for everyone as it only seems like yesterday when the rowers vacated the building to make a bit of room for the sailing community to return.
Well, after this weekend’s events, we will be needing more room as there was an expectant team of PB2 pupils waiting patiently in the new Bosun’s Locker training facility equipped with all the tools required to enable Jo, our club’s training instructor, to pass on her knowledge and experience to the willing trainees. Congratulations to Paul and Sam Underwood, inc Terry Cemm, our resident Bosun’s Locker caretaker, and with an age range from 12 to 83, it was a testament to the fact that you are never to young or old to enjoy sailing or water activities here at Saundersfoot SC.
Upstairs, there was another crowd gathering to take part in a first aid course being run by Lynda Cook from Neyland Yacht Club so a busy schedule for the training team before the club was being made ready to be hired out during the evening for another members social.
On Sunday, the PB2 course completed with a trip out to Wool House Rocks and a lot more tactical manoeuvres in the bay for the team being trained.
In the afternoon, the club also hosted and was open to the RNLI fundraising team for the ‘Brew for the Crew.’ Unfortunately, the weather was not as kind to attract in lots of passing visitors as I think they were all possibly tucked up in their caravans or hotels keeping warm. There was though a good number who braved the weather for this great cause and attended and thanks as always to the ladies who organise and bake all the fabulous cakes. Salty Dog can not get enough jam and cream scones.
Next Week’s racing
Sunday 8th starting at 6 pm with Maurice Clarke as OOD and one race to control from hopefully a sunny spot on the corner of the harbour. This week sees the start of the club’s Friday sailing sessions so watch Facebook for details and what’s happening.
Club Training
This year’s sail training plans are well underway, including the very popular Push the Boat out which the club is hosting on May 20, see website for details.
Level 1-2 sailing will be July 25-29 for anyone who signs up at Push the Boat out. There are Powerboat Level 2 course planned in the diary as well, but are currently fully booked.
The Bosun’s Locker
We have the Flyer returning from some technical repairs on Wednesday, and if the sea trials go well, will be available again for race duties.
Ramblings from
the locker
The new refurbished locker seems to be getting the use it was planned to from members repairing and using the equipment available to keep their prized boats in top order. Contact Mick for more details, but we have a really great facility now available and if you want to repair your boat in the dry then look no further.
Wednesday repair club
Wednesday is proving to be popular with helpers offering to come down and be involved, thanks to those who have contacted me and of course we all cannot make it each week, but there is now a list in the locker of all the ongoing jobs that we need to be keeping up with to maintain not only the sailing fleet but the club
