The new season’s proceedings for Tenby Youth were kicked off at home, by Aberystwyth, who won the toss and this was the start of a very good game of rugby.

From the start, Tenby pressured the visitors and some great interplay resulted in a penalty. Quickly taken, Ben Pugh forced his way over the line to score the first try, with a difficult conversion being taken by Harry Rossiter, who put the ball right through the middle of the posts to give a dream start.

From the restart, some hard tackles led to an infringement which resulted in a penalty to the Seasiders. Captain Dan Machin pointed to the posts and again Harry Rossiter duly obliged with a well-judged kick, giving Tenby a well-deserved lead of 10 points.

Nerves were beginning to settle and a little belief of what may be possible dawned on this young youth team.

The first half was by no means over, though, and the Seasiders were keeping possession of the ball and keeping up the pressure in the Aberystwyth half. From a pick up and go, Lucas Probert forced his way over the line for a second Tenby try. Again an easier kick this time for Harry Rossiter, 17-0.

Tenby were soon back pressurising the visitors and from a clearance kick from their own line it looked as if touch would be made near the halfway mark. However, the ball hovered and was held back by the wind and the Aberystwyth number 14 caught it, evaded two tackles and sprinted over for a well-deserved and great try.

A difficult conversion from the touchline was missed and the whistle blown for half-time wth the score at 17-5.

The Seasiders were in no mood to lose their momentum, though, and soon after the start of the second half, Joseph Owen made his way over for a third try. Again the conversion was precise and sailed between the posts.

Everything was going well, lineout ball was being mastered by Lewis Catt and tackling was immense, all resulting in a try for Jack Gooding, who shares the captaincy with Dan Machin. Again the conversion was successful.

It was now time for the impact players to be brought on and relieve some tired legs.

The substitutions brought no respite for Aberystwyth and further tries were scored by Joseph Owen and Will Swales, with successful conversions added by Harry Rossiter.

The final score was 45-5 to Tenby who started the season with a very good win indeed.

Thanks go to the referee, Mr. Huw Jones, and the visiting Aberystwyth team; also to Tenby youth coaches, Richard Rossiter and Leon Gooding, for all their work in the closed season and manager, Mrs. Julia Gooding.
