Kicking-off in glorious conditions for running rugby, Tycroes took advantage as Tenby failed to secure the ball, and the first three minutes of the match, consisted of a game of kick tennis with several players involved in trying to gain the advantage over the opposition with Tenby winning out, by forcing a lineout deep in the Tycroes half.

Back row forwards Andrew Cooke and skipper Luke Hansford maintained the pressure with a slick piece of ball handling, but Mark Heywood was unable to hold on to the ball and the move came to an abrupt halt.

From the scrum however, Will Crockford exploited some loose marking at the set piece and created an opportunity for Scott James to cross the line for the first try of the afternoon which Toby Smith superbly converted from wide out for an early 7-0 lead.

From the restart, Tycroes secured possession and a promising move was halted with what referee Jones deemed to be a high tackle and Scott Bowen narrowed the scores to 7-3.

Keen to keep the visitors on the back foot, Tenby put together some promising attacks, before flanker Andrew Cooke split the stretched visitors defence with a searing break to go over under the posts for a well-earned try, after a lengthy period of sustained pressure.

With Toby Smith adding the extras, Tenby stretched the lead out to a deserved 14-3.

As with earlier in the game, there then followed another period of kick tennis with the end result again favouring the home side, and from a lineout, a clean Mike Davies catch was capitalised on by the rest of the Tenby pack that drove over the try line for Luke Hansford to emerge from a pile of bodies to claim the unconverted try and a comfortable 19-3 advantage.

Tycroes desperately tried to get into the game, but the Tenby defence forced them to go lateral rather than forward and the half ended with a sliced clearance penalty kick by Bowen being capitalised on by Scott James who linked with Mark Heywood and Jonny Morgan who created a scoring opportunity for winger Asparassa, only for the over-worked Tycroes defence to somehow bundle the winger into touch close to the try line.

The high-hanging kick by James put Tycroes into all sorts of trouble at the start of the second half and it sparked off a series of attacks that they managed to keep at bay until a clever switch move set-up a situation where from the ensuing scrum Crockford crossed the line for the bonus point fourth try, and with Smith again adding the extras, Tycroes were looking down the barrel of a heavy defeat being at 26-3 with still more than 30 minutes of the second half to play.

Undeterred however, a game Tycroes side put together some good passing and backing up moves exploiting an exposed short side situation close to the Tenby line ending with second row John James being driven over the line for their first try, reducing the lead to 26-8.

Try as they might, however, Tycroes were still being forced to go lateral and securing the ball at a breakdown Tenby exploited a good attacking opportunity as the Tycroes scrum lost control of the ball presenting Andrew Cooke with a golden chance to score his second try, which he gratefully took, and with Smith popping over the conversion the lead was extended to 33-8.

Tenby brought Mouritz Neumann off the bench to replace Mark Heywood a change that was followed by Alex Thomas replacing Mike Davis, both players having contributed constructively to the situation Tenby found itself in.

Continuing to pressurise the visitors defence, Tenby put together another series of enterprising attacks involving both backs and forwards with a superb team try eventually being scored by Barry Parsons, and with Smith yet again putting over the conversion, the lead was stretched out to an impressive 40-8.

Credit to Tycroes as they manfully stuck to their task and from a promising series of pick and go’s close to the Tenby line second row James picked up his second score of the afternoon closing the difference to 40-13.

There then followed the try of the match when a pass from Smith to Jordon Asparassa that was legal, but just falling in front of Jordan who, with a George Best lightning like piece of footballing skill, lobbed the ball over the last line of defence with his foot to re-gather and dive over the line for a magical try.

Failing to add to his 10 point haul, Smith was wide with the difficult conversion as the score was extended to 45-13.

A great win by Tenby following their disappointing defeat the previous week down at Hendy pushes them up the league table to sit second behind last week’s victors.

Plenty of encouragement as the coaching team plan what to do over the next five weeks with Tenby having a visit from Division 2 East Central team Llanishen in the WRU Plate tomorrow (Saturday) followed by an away fixture on November 12, at Haverfordwest, and a home game on November 26 against Pontyberem, with currently, November 5 and 19 down as blank weeks.
