Haverfordwest were crowned division one winners of the Nicholas Insurance. Pembroke County Cricket League after they secured a comprehensive winning draw against last year’s champions Neyland.
Had the home team managed to defeat the town there was a possibility that Cresselly could have pipped Danny Potter’s men to the title yet the visitors were inspired by Simon Holliday who hit 90 to ensure their total of 220-7 wasn’t passed.
Ian Sefton ensured his team were able to celebrate the end of the season quickly after his sparkling innings of 86 ensured an early finish at Llangwm.
The home side batted first and were quickly skittled for 138 after Ceri Brace took 3-37 and Tom Davies 2-18 before Sefton got to work by making merry against the hosts’ attack. Ceri Brace proved his all-round credentials by hitting 49 not out.
Adam Chandler has been Cresselly’s stand out batsman this year and he too finished on a high by hitting 73 not out in his team’s six wicket win against Johnston.
The Tigers batted first and were all out for 176 as Ryan Lewis took 5-91 and Mike Shaw 4-22 before Chandler struck form once against for the home team.
Down the road at Lawrenny the day wasn’t quite so bright after the home team went down by nine wickets against relegated Llanrhian and this despite scoring 171 all out.
James Buckle scored 49, Andrew Cole 25 and Phil Cole 28 but a brilliant 101 not out by Gareth Davies secured the one-sided win for the visitors.
Whitland meanwhile finished on a low note after they were beaten by four wickets at home against St Ishmaels. Iestyn Scourfield hit 64 not out, Kevin Pearce 36 and Paul Davies 24 in their 167 all out yet despite Matthew Davies’ 3-51, the Borderers were soundly beaten in the end.
Elsewhere in the division, Llangwm were relegated while Llanrhian stayed up after Cresselly seconds finished runners’ up in division two meaning only Narberth got promoted.
Promoted and champions they may have been but Narberth’s game at home against Pembroke was abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch and so too was Whitland seconds’ at Hook. Kilgetty meanwhile, started the day in second place five points ahead of Cresselly seconds and they were hoping for a weekend washout because their scheduled game against Camrose was cancelled after Camrose pulled out of the league.
Had there been a washout no teams would have received points meaning Kilgetty would have joined Narberth in division one yet Cresselly seconds managed a win against Burton meaning Kilgetty’s hopes were dashed.
Burton could only manage 141-9 in their innings after Matthew Lewis and Lyn Richards both took a brace apiece before Alex Bailey’s 40 and Matthew Webb’s 37 secured the three wicket win.
In the must win clash between Haverfordwest seconds and Saundersfoot, the home side prevailed by 119 runs meaning the visitors go down.
The Town scored 189-8 despite Neil Powling’s 5-34 and Tom Mansbridge’s 2-31 but then Saundersfoot were all out for 70 with Paul Mansbridge and Sam Franklin both scoring 18.
In division three, Carew seconds and Stackpole were promoted while Pembroke Dock and Hundleton went down.
Carew’s game against Lawrenny was abandoned after Carew had scored 67-2 with Haydn Shapcott 27 not out while Hundleton went down by seven wickets against Lamphey after the home side were all out for 97 with Jonathan Williams top scoring on 37. Hywel Gibbs took 2-20 for the Stags but Andrew Skeels took 3-18 to skittle them quickly.
In reply Scott Brunton ensured it was a good day for him after he scored 26 to go with his 3-17 while Peter McGilloway struck a hard hitting 25 not out and Nick Johnson 36 not out to seal the win.
Pembroke Dock went down after they failed to overcome Llechryd’s 2-1-7. Nick Daley and Steve Alford both took two wickets for the Dock but only Peter Kingdom with 47 and Luke Murray with 22 got going as the hosts settled at 153-9.
The game between Herbrandston and Stackpole was abandoned.
Haverfordwest thirds went up from division four as champions with Hook seconds joining them but the weather put paid to all but one game in the division as Haverfordwest thirds beat Burton seconds by six wickets.
In division five. Fishguard were crowned champions and Llanrhian seconds go up with them to division four with Carew thirds crossing them on the way down. The weather scuppered all games in that division.
Cresselly thirds managed 95 all out against Fishguard before rain stopped play with Steffan Jenkins hitting 47.
Meanwhile in division six, Neyland thirds and Crymych seconds were promoted, the latter doing so despite finishing bottom of the division, yet with only two teams in it, that was always going to be the case. No teams were relegated from five meaning division five will be bigger next season.
