Milford Waterfront hosted P1’s Welsh Grand Prix of the Sea last weekend with Saundersfoot duo Sam and Daisy Coleman gunning for their second UK title.
Milford became the season finale for this years P1 Superstock UK championship, ramping up the pressure on the local duo, with an extended programme of six races scheduled after the slated season finale - Scarborough’s Yorkshire Grand Prix of the Sea, was pulled just days before Milford due to lack of support from local businesses and council.
A maximum of 120 points on offer meant that despite a 17 point lead over their nearest rivals retaining the title was not a forgone conclusion.
Saturday’s rough conditions would usually favour the Colemans, however mindful of a non finish obliterating their lead they drove consistently recording second place in all three races behind the flying Milford Waterfront boat.
This slashed the championship lead to 8 points and the same results Sunday would mean losing out on the title by a single point.
Knowing they only had to stay ahead of their nearest rivals, on Sunday they boxed clever and started the day with another two second place finishes, behind a rejuvenated Arthur J Gallagher boat piloted by the returning John Donnelly, but crucially ahead of the Milford Waterfrond pair of Charles Morris and Andy Foster.
The ensuing 12 point lead left the Colemans only needing to finish the last race to retain the coveted UK championship. Engine problems on the way to the start line for race 6 made Sam and Daisy’s mind up that despite only being 5 points behind the Milford boat in the weekend’s standings, it was far more important to see the chequered flag than go for weekend glory and risk a non finish.
Cruising round and protecting the boat the pair crossed the line in fifth meaning the title was retained by 5 points, finishing second on the podium for the weekend in the process.
“To be able to race in front of friends and family at home in Pembs is a dream for us, to retain the title on home water even more so!” said Sam.
“I must apologise to anyone who came down and only caught the last race when we were cruising, it’s not usually like that I promise!
“We know we were unlucky with the weather, Saturday especially, but we’d like to thank all that made the event possible and the people who came and supported us too,” he added.
