A fine day greeted the seniors Seniors of St. Davids as they arrived at Trefloyne Golf Club. With the course in prime condition, there could be no excuses from either side.
Leading off was captain Mike Allen, partnered by Jack Zeraschi, playing John Griffiths and Simon Millet. After winning the third and fourth holes, it looked as though the home pair were going to have an easy ride, but they were pulled back to all-square when the St Davids pair won two of the next three holes to level the match.
That was as good as it got for John and Simon as Mike and Jack then went on to win the next four holes. A win on the 11th by John reduced the deficit to three, but wins on the 12th and 14th gave the home pair a 5 and 4 win.
Due to a late withdrawal, Dennis Holloway had to take on Luke Lewis and Peter Bellam by himself. If nothing else, Dennis likes a challenge! Four of the first five holes changed hands, but a par on the seventh and a birdie four on the eighth gave Dennis a two-hole lead. The lead was cut to one with a loss on the 12th, but Dennis then hit back winning the 13th. Once again, the deficit was cut to one when the St. Davids pair won the 17th, but Dennis won the last to win 2 up.
Wayne Connett and John Richards paired up to play Ken Davies and Tony Harper. This match was even until the fourth, then John and Wayne took charge, winning five of the next six holes. A further win on the 12th, and a half on 13, gave the home pair a 6 and 5 win.
Next off were Ian Whiting and Rob Nixon playing Paul Wright and Dave Roberts. Rob and Ian took command of this match from the off, leading by four after nine. Wins on 10 and 12 gave some hope to the St. Davids pair, but wins on the next three holes sealed a win for the home pair by 5 and 3.
Darrell Jones and Bryn Hughes teamed up to play Ian Watson and Dave Heighway. This was a close game, with Darrell and Bryn leading by one at the turn. The next five holes were shared, Trefloyne winning 11 and 13, St. Davids winning 10 and 14. A win on the 15th for the home pair gave them a two-hole cushion, and halves on the next two holes were enough for a 2 up win.
The final game concerned Roger Woodward and Derek Jones playing Ian Gregson and Joe Garner. After an even start, the Trefloyne pair took a four-hole lead after nine. A win on the 10th extended the lead, but losses on the 12th and 13th gave hope to St. Davids. Unfortunately, Derek and Roger then got their act together again and won the next two holes to win 5 and 3.
Final result Trefloyne 6 St. Davids 0.
