The Tenby GC team travelled to Newport Links for their final away game of the season last Saturday. They needed to win in order to retain a chance of gaining promotion to Division One.

However, despite wearing new polo shirts, Tenby lost by the narrowest of margins, five games to four. Consequently, Haverfordwest are now certain of returning to the top flight having already won at both Machynys and Newport, as well as securing a valuable half at Garnant Park last weekend.

First up for Tenby were Dave Morris and Darren Thomas. They faced Paul Thomas and Nick Davies and were all-square after 14 holes. The Newport pair then birdied two of the next three holes for a 2 and 1 win.

Ben Childs and Neil Thomas faced the experienced Dai Linquist and Richie Payne, who always held the upper hand and also won by 2 and 1.

Chris Thompson and Martin Morris pulled one back for Tenby. They controlled their game against Dai Owen and Barry Bird before winning 3 and 1.

Andrew Cope and Peter Rossi struggled against James Price and Alistair Davies, going down 4 and 3.

Jon Bolter and Dave Hancock always trailed Jim Penfold and Barry Truslove, losing 3 and 2.

Paul Jenkins and Gary McNeilly suffered a similar fate against Shaun Penfold and Gethin Griffiths, losing 4 and 3.

Tenby’s tail wagged, but it was too late. Evergreen Steve Sutcliffe and Dai Cope enjoyed the biggest victory of the day when they beat Owen Duggan and Ifan Phillips by 5 and 4.

Loz Phillips won his second consecutive away game. He and partner Chris Beecher beat Owain Evans and Derek Evans by 3 and 1.

In the last match, Roger Schooling and Steve Maytum dovetailed well for their commanding 4 and 3 win over Alan Jeffries and John Viner.

Tenby now have two home matches to round off the season. Garnant are the visitors tomorrow and Glynhir B the following week.
