The annual charity match in aid of the two captains’ charities started in 2009 when Chris Beecher asked if we could have a fun mixed event between Christmas and the New Year.

Unfortunately, a few weeks back, when the 2017 event was due to have been held, the day dawned with sleet and hail showers, and possible snow. It was cold, wet and miserable. So, as the idea was for the competition to be fun, it was decided to postpone it to last Saturday.

Countryfile, the previous Sunday, had forecast that it would be a sunny day after a week of wet, windy storms… but my, did they get it wrong!

We started in the rain, and the first half of the field finished in the rain, although the sun did appear then.

Both captains were hugely grateful to the people who did brave the weather.

Pam thanked all sections who contributed to the raffle, the sponsors - Dai and Penny Cope, and Chris and Louise Hill - and the generosity of the competitors.

In all, £422 was raised, with the captains getting half each for their worthwhile charities.

The captain’s charity is Saundersfoot Community First Responders and the lady captain’s charity is Haverfordwest Samaritans.

Pam also thanked Bev for coming in at 8.30 am to run the raffle, with the prizes later being presented by captain Mike.

In third place in the competition with 37 points were Maura Gunning and (the missing) Jim Moffat; in second place, also on 37 points, but beating them on the back nine, were Chris and Carol Beecher; and in first place, with 38 points, were Denise Edwards and her son, Roy.

Considering the weather, these were excellent scores, but everyone did well just to be out there.

The next mixed event is the Valentines Mixed Foursomes on Saturday, February 17, and that can be signed up for from today (Friday). There is also an event on in the evening for anyone who wants to make a night of it.

Tomorrow (Saturday), the Llewellyn Thomas Mixed Knock-out can be signed up for. Please read instructions on the computer about paying for this in the Pro Shop.

Finally, a big thank you to Laura for her help in the office, to Tim for his work in the Pro Shop, and to all those who helped make the charity event such a great success.

H.K.M.
