The Pembrokeshire Girls League started on Sunday and St. Florence played their first league game at home against Kilgetty. This match was kindly sponsored by Tan-Y-Castell, Narberth.

Under 12s

St. Florence Under 12s (seen above) had 12 girls, so were able to rotate the players. With the girls playing for an hour, the game was split into three 20 minutes sections.

In the first section, St. Florence started really well and scored two quick goals by Teigan Canton and Charlotte McSweeney.

Kilgetty were also soon on the score sheet with a breakaway goal that caught out St. Florence. This woke St. Florence up and they pressed to win the ball back quickly and scored twice more through Teigan and Nancy Black to make the score 4-1 after the first 20 minutes.

In the second 20 minutes, both teams had their chances to score, but it was St. Florence who managed to extend their lead with goals by Mabli Evans, Connie Lawrence and another by Teigan.

There was some good play all round by St. Florence, with Maddie Williams, Fiona Allen, Ella Thomas and Tamika Simms passing the ball around to create chances for their team-mates. Emily Roberts almost scored when her shot went just wide.

The final third saw Kilgetty score another goal, which their hard work deserved. This didn’t affect St. Florence as Fiona Allen replied with a good goal and Teigan finished off the day with four goals for herself.

Alex Young was unlucky not to get on the score sheet after seeing a couple of shots just miss the target. There was also some good defending by Marli Lawrence, Ella and Connie to stop any more goals being conceded.

St. Florence won the game 9-2. Well done to both teams, a great start to the season.

Team: Ella Thomas, Emily Roberts, Alex Young, Charlotte McSweeney, Connie Lawrence, Fiona Allen, Mabli Evans, Maddie Williams, Marli Lawrence, Teigan Canton, Tamika Simms, Nancy Black.

Under 14s

With only five players this season, the Under 14s (seen right) will play friendlies against the rest of the league to keep them playing.

Kilgetty played with seven players and, being a strong team, they finished with a win of 7-0.

There were some good displays by the St. Florence girls, even though they were unable to get on the scoreboard. Halle Brace worked really hard to win the ball and push her side forward and Jasmine Hughes and Hope Yeates defended well, while Olwen Evans and Delyn James both showed how good they were while playing in goal and with the ball at their feet.

Considering that this was the first time they had played together and the strength of the opposition, they should be proud of themselves and this will help them improve individually and as a team.

For the final 20 minutes, Kilgetty and St. Florence mixed their players to even up the game, which the St. Florence girls enjoyed.

Team: Halle Brace, Jazz Hughes, Hope Yeates, Olwen Evans and Delyn James.
