The weather was thankfully fine last weekend for the culmination of this year’s Saundersfoot in-house competitions.

The accolades of overall club champion again went to Steve Poole and Ann Lewis, who retained the titles they won last year.

In the men’s final, Steve narrowly defeated club captain Mackie Brace 21-19. On what turned out to be the last end, Mackie lay two shots to win the match, only for Steve to draw the shot with his last bowl.

In the ladies’ final, club president Ann Lewis defeated Gwenda Rees, also winning the two-wood singles against the same opponent, before they teamed up together to win the pairs.

Steve Dick again had a successful few days, winning the Jubilee Pairs with Christine Ball, the mixed pairs with Lorna Bissell and the triples with Roy Kennion and Nev Ruff.

Club treasurer David Davies, appearing in his first finals, did himself proud by winning the Rabbits singles and the two-wood and Over 60s pairs events, partnering Graham Hughes.

Tournament secretary Paul Blayney and Alan Brain both won two finals, Paul retaining his handicap singles title and partnering Mackie Brace to win the four-wood pairs, whilst Alan was victorious in the two-wood and Over 60s singles events.

The ladies’ handicap singles title went to Kath Blayney for the fourth time, with the ladies Rabbits singles being won by Barbara Dearne.

The mixed triples final was between Sandra Ingerson, Alan Rich and Neil Hensman and Lyn Reyad, Dai Davies and Jean Dezille. In a thrilling encounter which had the spectators enthralled and the match level at 13-all after the statutory 18 ends, the final went to an extra end. Jean’s triples were holding a match winning lie, but up stepped Neil with the very last wood to draw the shot and win the game for his team.

The trophies won on the weekend will be presented at the club next Friday evening, September 23, with all members welcome to attend.
