Congratulations to three ladies from our club who between them won two Welsh titles last weekend at the Welsh Women’s Bowling Association finals at Carmarthen.

In the pairs event, mother and daughter Stephanie and Gemma Amos defeated a Port Talbot pair in the final by a convincing score line of twenty five shots to eleven having won their semi final by four shots.

Teaming up with Club President Ann Lewis in the triples event, after a close semi-final against the Berriew team led by Caroline Taylor, they had an equally tough final before beating the threesome from Merthyr West End by three shots.

These are the first senior welsh titles for Steph and Gemma with Ann having previously won the pairs with Viv Edwards and the triples with Kath Blayney and Ceris Hewlings.

The ladies will now proudly represent Wales in next year’s British Isles championships in Jersey.

SAUNDERSFOOT 88 (11PTS) FIVE ARCHES 62 (3PTS)

Two matches again for the first division team last week, starting with a midweek game at home to Five Arches of Tenby.

A slow start saw the villager’s three shots down after five ends but lead by nine at the half way point.

A tricky second half saw the lead remain at nine shots after fifteen ends but a strong finish saw Saundersfoot eventually win by twenty six.

Rink scores with Saundersfoot first and Five Arches skips only were: Graham Hughes, John Amos, Brian Desmond, Myrddin Dennis 34 Neil Dickenson 11; Alan Brain, Selwyn Price, Mackie Brace, Joe Dennis 18 Viv John 18; Dai Davies, Don Poole, Neil Hensman, Berwin Dennis 22 Ashley Hooper 14; Brian Dooley, Dennis Ball, Paul Blayney, Steve Dick 14 Jon Hubbard 19.

MILFORD HAVEN 68 (4PTS) SAUNDERSFOOT 80 (10pts)

Playing their penultimate league game last Saturday away at Milford Haven, Saundersfoot gained another victory by twelve shots.

The overall scores were close throughout but mainly due to another big win by the rink skipped by Myrddin Dennis, a potential banana skin was avoided with a ten point haul.

On rink one, Alan Brain, Selwyn Price, Mackie Brace and Joe Dennis were involved in a real battle against Paul (Podge) Morgan and with the lead changing several times it was all down to the last end with the home boys picking up two shots to win by the narrowest of margins, eighteen shots to seventeen.

Rink two saw Steve Dick skip with Don Poole, Brian Dooley and Paul Blayney as his front three against Ernie Sturley.

The Saundersfoot boys led throughout and with the help of counts of a three and five in the middle of the match, gained their two points with a win by twenty one shots to fifteen.

Graham Hughes, John Amos, Brian Desmond and Myrddin Dennis put in another match winning performance on rink three with a thirty shots to seven win over Gary Walters.

On rink four, an uncharacteristic poor display saw Dai Davies, Neil Hensman, Steve Williams and captain Berwyn Dennis suffer a rare defeat by twenty eight shots to twelve against Tony Ellyatt.

LEAGUE POSITION

Saundersfoot now lead the league by thirty points with only Haverfordwest, who have games in hand, able to catch them.

The away match between the two sides tomorrow, against the only team to have defeated the villagers in the league this season, is therefore greatly significant as a win for Saundersfoot in what is their last match, would mean their first title since 2006.

ST ISSELLS TEAMS

The men’s team were yet again denied a fixture last Saturday with Neyland again unable to field a team.

As this is the second occurrence, all fourteen points now go to St Issells, lifting them to second in the Second Division table but with Fishguard and Goodwick still looking favourites for promotion.

The St Issells ladies had two away fixtures last week, winning against Pembroke Dock Park and losing at Milford.

Against the Park ladies, Kath Blayney, Christine Ball, Sue Dooley and Sue Roden lost nineteen shots to sixteen against Barbara Rapley, whilst Lynne Reyed, Leona Davies, Christine Harris and Shirley Cox defeated Penny Brickle by thirty four shots to fifteen to give an overall win by sixteen shots.

At Milford last Saturday, with Kath Williams and Jacqui Ford replacing Sue Dooley and Leona Davies in the team, both rinks lost in a seven shot defeat.

Tomorrow, the ladies play their last match of the season away at Tasker of Haverfordwest and a favourable result will hopefully give them a top three finish for the second consecutive year, having just being piped into second place last year.

WELSH PAIRS SUCCESS

The Saundersfoot club would like to congratulate Paul Diment and Ryan Thomas of the Tenby club who last week won the Welsh Pairs final at Llandrindod Wells by one shot after a thrilling match that was decided on an extra end.

They will now represent Wales at the British Isles championships next year.
