This year’s captain of the Saundersfoot ladies section, Val James, held her special day last week, with the topical theme being ‘Ascot’.

There was an array of glamorous outfits and even a jockey attended the occasion!

After a welcome drink, despite the hot weather and their attire, the ladies adjourned to the bowling green and firstly played a ‘spider’, which was won by Joyce Howe, and then a short game of triples, with the winners being Kath Blayney, Rene Silcox and Sandra Ingerson.

Returning to the clubhouse, they were treated to a sumptuous meal, before Val presented this year’s Ladies Captain’s Shield to Saundersfoot secretary, Steph Amos, in recognition of again being part of the Welsh team and her work for the club.

A sweepstake took place, which was won by Jean Dezille, and the winner of the best ‘Ascot’ dressed lady was Pam Bowen, with a special prize going to Rene Silcox as the jockey ‘Miss Whiplash’.

After a lucky dip raffle, with all present having been given a free ticket, Val thanked all those who had attended and her friends for helping to organise the event, as well as those who had given her cards and presents.

Finally, the gentlemen, namely husband Ken, Paul Sneyd, Brian Dooley, Graham Hughes, Alan Rich, Richard Whittaker and Paul Blayney, were thanked for waiting at table, doing the washing up and serving the drinks.

Val was also using the occasion to raise funds for charity which will be donated to the Welsh Ambulance Service.

SAUNDERSFOOT 86 (2 pts)

HAVERFORDWEST 90 (12)

The Saundersfoot first division team suffered their first defeat of the season at home to Haverfordwest last Saturday and received a wake-up call before their Carruthers Shield Welsh Cup knockout round of 32 encounter tomorrow afternoon when they entertain Merthyr West End.

On rink one, Brian Dooley, Paul Blayney, Liam Price and skip Joe Dennis found themselves nine shots down after just four ends against Darren Latham, Alan Wills, Keith Thorpe and Tony Wilks, but fought back to take a three-shot lead on the 18th end.

Unfortunately, they then dropped a count of four and eventually lost by 20 shots to eighteen.

Graham Hughes led for skip Myrddin Dennis on rink two with Neil Hensman second and Brian Desmond third.

Normally a sure bet for two points, on this occasion they too found the going tough against Neil Crawford, Martin Dawes, Chris Wilks and Paul Jenkins.

A poor start saw them 13 shots adrift at one stage and, despite a comeback towards the end, lost by 27 shots to 19.

Berwyn Dennis skipped Dai Davies, Don Poole and Steve Dick on rink three against the Gareth Barrett four and were soon 15 shots to nil ahead.

Despite a comeback by the visitors, Captain Marvel’s boys picked up the only success of the day with a win by 32 shots to 19.

Rink four saw another defeat when Alan Brain, Barry Lee, Selwyn Price and son Louis were defeated by Dai John, Dave Summers, Billy Jones and Richard O’Leary by 24 shots to 17.

The Saundersfoot team were obviously disappointed as they were eight shots in front overall after 16 ends, but against current form, finished poorly.

They still top the first division table, however, and as well as tomorrow’s cup game, also play Whitland in the league at home next Wednesday evening.
