OPEN TOURNAMENT WEEK
The annual Saundersfoot Open Tournament week reached a climax last Saturday when three thrilling finals took place.
In the Osborne Trophy singles, Paul Diment, of Tenby, defeated fellow club member Mike Jackson to gain his second victory in the event, having previously won in 2004.
The Poole Bowl pairs final was won by Saundersfoot father and son Myrddin and Joe Dennis, with a win against Paul Diment and Andrew Muskett in a match that enthralled the watching spectators with the high standard of bowling from all four players.
In the Absolute Bowls Plate event, Lyn Guy from Berwick defeated Richard Whittaker of the home club.
Bowlers from all over the county and beyond had played throughout the week on the excellent playing surface with the weather mainly fine and both competitions open to both males and females for the first time.
At the presentation ceremony, conducted by tournament organiser Paul Blayney, the trophies were presented by Saundersfoot president Ann Lewis and Don Poole, with club chairman Billy Glynn also in attendance.
Paul began by thanking the sponsors of the event, The Heritage Park in Stepaside, Absolute Bowls and Templeton Beer Wine and Spirit Company.
Paul then thanked all the competitors and spectators as well as those who had assisted him, making special mention of Ken James, Neil Hensman and Neville Ruff.
Vice-chairlady Diane Rigden and the ladies section were thanked for providing the food each day, as were those who had supplied cakes and raffle prizes and the members who had served behind the bar.
The markers for the singles games were also thanked, particularly Neil and Nev for officiating the singles finals and Graham Hughes, Alan Rich, Brian Dooley and David Hicks who had manned the scoreboards, as well as Collette Bethwaite who had umpired throughout the day.
Following the trophy awards, Ann Lewis thanked everybody for their support, with particular mention of Paul and Diane for all their hard work, presenting them with gifts on behalf of the club, with her comments echoed by Donny Poole and Billy Glynn.

WEDDING
Congratulations to Stephen Poole and Michelle on their wedding last Friday. The marriage took place at St. Issell’s Church, followed by a reception at the Regency Hall. There were a few sore heads the following day for the club’s open week finals, but Myrddin and Joe must have been sensible as, as reported above, they teamed up to win the pairs. Stephen and Michelle honeymooned at the Celtic Manor resort in Newport and are sent best wishes for their future married life together.
BARBECUE NIGHT
The club are holding a pig roast on Friday, August 11. A few ends of bowls will also take place and fancy dress is the order of the day!
