SAUNDERSFOOT 104 MILFORD HAVEN 67
Another win on Saturday maintained the villagers’ unbeaten league record and kept them on top of the Pembrokeshire Division One table at the halfway point of the season.
Although missing two skips in captain Berwyn Dennis and Steve Poole, the team again produced a winning result and gained 13 points, restricting the visitors to just one.
In a start to the match that left the Milford team shellshocked, a 31-shot lead had been established after just five ends, although having adjusted to the speed of the green, which was in immaculate condition, this had been reduced to 20 at the halfway point.
The overall win was never in doubt and with two rinks romping away, it was left to the other two to dig in and claim their points.
On rink two, Joe Dennis skipped captain for the day Dai Davies, Selwyn Price and Richard Whittaker to a victory over Ernie Sturley by 32 shots to 20 in a high scoring game.
Rink three saw a real tussle, with Roy Hooper, David Walters, Brian Desmond and Steve Dick up against the Brian Cale four. Scores were fairly even at the start, but then losing eight shots in three ends just before tea saw the home boys fall behind. Fighting back, they picked up 12 shots in the latter stages to take a four-shot lead going into the last end, which unfortunately evaporated to leave honours even with a 19-all draw.
Graham Hughes led as usual for Myrddin Popeye Dennis, with Neil Hensman at number two and Alan Brain third on rink four. Building up a 13 shots to nil advantage after just six ends was followed by a slight blip in the middle stages, allowing the Roy Thomas led visitors to begin to claw back the deficit. A one-sided finish, however, saw the Saundersfoot boys win all the last seven ends to win by 32 shots to nine.
On rink five, Dennis Ball, Paul Blayney, Mackie Brace and Don Poole started well against Raymond Lillycrop, Brendan Graham, Jim Thomas and Tony Ellyatt and they built up a 10-shot lead at tea. The break, however, led to the wheels coming off somewhat and after the penultimate end, scores were tied. Two down with only the home skip to bowl, Donnie produced the shot of the match to trail the jack and to rapturous applause, ensure a narrow 21 shots to 19 win.
The team take a short break now and play their next fixture on Wednesday, July 12, when they visit Tenby in an evening match at 6 pm.

Tourists from over the Severn Bridge were welcomed to Saundersfoot last week for a mixed friendly consisting of four rinks and two triples and finished their tour with a 57- shot win.
With the result purely academic (honest), an enjoyable afternoon was had by all, with much laughter afterwards in the clubhouse, particularly with the visitors having their own Jethro impersonator leading the way with some West Country humour.
Rink scores, with Saundersfoot first and St. Andrews skips only, were:
Peter Williams, Neil Hensman, Sandra Ingerson, Sue Roden 12; J Marshall 21.
Lynne Reyed, Christine Ball, Richard Whittaker 10; L. Pearce 22.
Paul Sneyd, Pam Bowen, Alan Rich, Shirley Cox 14; P. Jones 22.
Val James, David Walters, Alwen Hughes 12; R. Maker 30.
Kath Williams, Mick Smith, Rod Bramhall, Billy Glynn 16; A Dunford 21.
