SAUNDERSFOOT 109 (14pts) ST. THOMAS 56 (0)

The Saundersfoot First Division team continued their impressive league form last Saturday with a convincing win over visiting St. Thomas of Haverfordwest and remain unbeaten after the first six games of the season.

The villagers rapidly built up a 16-shot lead after just five ends and this had been extended to 23 at the halfway point of the match.

The second half saw close tussles on rinks two and three whilst rinks four and five romped away to give a 53- shot win and all 14 points.

On rink two, captain Berwyn Dennis skipped Dai Davies, Selwyn Price and nephew Joe against the visiting four led by the St. Thomas captain, Tony Wilks. After 12 ends, the home boys only led by one shot, mainly due to some impressive bowling by Wilko, but winning six of the last nine ends led to a 19 shots to 13 win.

Things got a little nervous on rink three, with Roy Hooper, Brian Dooley, Brian Desmond and Steve Dick opposed by Neil Crawford. Building up an early 12-shot lead after just eight ends, back came the visitors to reduce the deficit to just five with two to play, but Stevie’s boys held on to win by 22 shots to 17.

Graham Hughes, Neil Hensman, Alan Brain and Myrddin Dennis played on rink four against the opposition skipped by the experienced Phil John. Leading by nine shots to nil after just three ends, the home four never looked back and ran out convincing winners by 30 shots to eight.

Rink five saw a game of two halves, with Dennis Ball, Paul Blayney, Mackie Brace and Don Poole up against Tom Waters, Mike Lawrence, Lance Murphy and Mike Codd. The St. Thomas four had the better of the early exchanges and led by seven shots to nil after three ends. The Saundersfoot boys slowly pegged back the lead and after 14 ends led by one shot. Winning the next six ends, however, including counts of a six, a five and two fours, gave them an impressive 38 shots to 18 win.

The team remain on top of the league table, although there is still a long way to go before the end of the season.

Tomorrow (Saturday) they have another home match, this time against Milford Haven.
