FRIENDLY

The first friendly of the season took place last week, with Saundersfoot hosting Briton Ferry.

Both teams enjoyed playing 18 ends on what was thankfully a sunny afternoon, with the visitors staying quite late in the clubhouse afterwards, enjoying a sing song.

The result was academic, but the villagers managed a close three-shot win, with top rink going to Roy Harris, new member Jacquie Ford, George Cavell and skip Steve Dick.

Rink scores, with Saundersfoot first and Briton Ferry skips only, were:

Christine Ball, Roy Bramhall, Beryl Lewis, Joe Dennis 18; B. Hunt 12.

Peter Williams, John Arman, Larry Dearne, Billy Glynn 10; I. Beesley 24.

Kath Williams, Val James, Dennis Ball, Mike Carr 15; R. Jenkins 23.

Lyn Reyad, Peter Guyett, Christine Harris, John Dugmore 15; P. Kilayn 22.

Barbara Dearne, Ken James, Mike Gouldingay, Dai Davies 13; W. Larner 12.

Roy Harris, Jacquie Ford, George Cavell, Steve Dick 28; R. Rees 3.

NEW ARRIVAL

Congratulations from all the members to Joe Dennis and partner Kasha on the birth of a daughter, Lexi May, last Friday.

FIXTURES

The men’s Saundersfoot First Division team commence their league campaign tomorrow (Saturday) with a visit to Fishguard and Goodwick, hoping for a good start to help better last year’s third placed finish.

Joining the club this season are Louis and Selwyn Price, who are transferring from Whitland, and there is also a welcome return for Alan Brain after a few years of not playing due to work commitments.

The St. Issell’s Second Division team, who also finished third last time out, and have several new additions of their own, have a home match on Sunday to start their season, the opposition being Pater, of Pembroke Dock.

The ladies teams also get underway, with Saundersfoot having a busy start with three home games.

On Saturday, they entertain Milford, on Sunday Pembroke Dock, both at 2 pm, and on Wednesday, Pendine are the visitors with a 6 pm start.

The St. Issell’s girls are also at home next Wednesday, playing Neyland, at 2 pm, in their first fixture.

The strength of the two ladies teams showed through again last season with them finishing second and third in the league and all four squads, men and ladies, are wished success and good bowling for a hopefully dry and sunny summer.

LADIES CAPTAINS DAY

This year’s overall ladies captain, Diane Disney, will be holding her Captain’s Day early this year, on Friday, May 13.

A list for those who would like to join her is at the club and it is hoped the occasion will raise a contribution to the RNLI.

NEW CLUB SHIRTS

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Heritage Park in Stepaside, the club will be sporting new shirts this season and we will be looking ‘pretty in pink’ in a partnership between the Heritage Park and the bowlers to raise funds for Cancer Research Wales. The shirts can be purchased from Tee’s R Us in New Hedges.

CLUB HANDBOOK

The Saundersfoot club have yet again produced a professional handbook for the members, mainly due to the efforts of club treasurer Dai Davies, secretary Sue Roden, Lynn Reyad, Peter Guyett and several others, and grateful thanks go to all the local businesses for supporting us.

COUNTY TOUR

This year’s men’s county president, Paul Blayney, of Saundersfoot, will be hosting a tour to Weston Super Mare between September 16-18 to hopefully finish the season off in style.

Places are still available and details can be found on the club noticeboard or by contacting Paul direct.
