CARRUTHERS VICTORY

The Giltar Hotel sponsored Tenby team continued their Carruthers Shield campaign with a fine 90-74 victory over a strong Presteigne side at the Sutton Street green on Saturday.

Included in the visitors’ line-up was Welsh international star and multi Commonweath Games medallist Robert Weale, who was drawn against Tenby’s own former English champion Lee Williamson.

The pair were involved in a battle royal until Weale played a wonder bowl to ditch the white with his very last wood and earn his rink a one-shot victory.

It was a similar story on the adjoining inside rink where Kieron Peregrine’s four also went down by the odd shot after another closely fought contest.

But the two narrow defeats were more than compensated for on the outside rinks, with the Guymer twins, aided by Mike Jackson and Chris Court, always in control in their game as they ran out comfortable winners.

Likewise on the show rink, where the large crowd watching on the balcony witnessed Andrew Muskett skip his rink of Aaron Lloyd, Peter Day and captain Paul Diment to a clear victory over another member of the Weale family.

As a result of their win, Tenby will now travel to play Loughor in the next round on July 2 as they continue their bid to make it to the Welsh finals at Llandod yet again.

Pendine 66 (4 pts)

Five Arches 76 (10)

On a sunny summer’s day, the Five Arches travelled to Pendine hoping to carry on the improved performance at Saundersfoot the previous week.

On rink two, Gerald and his rink of John, Mike and Beano had an up and down day. They started well, picking up two counts of four shots to lead by 15 shots to six at tea. However, an inspired fightback by Mal Evans’s rink had clawed the deficit back to only two on the 18th end and by winning the remaining three ends, they ran out winners by 22 shots to 17.

On rink three, Ashley and his rink of Viv, Kev and David had a tremendous start and led by 18 shots to three at the tea interval. The second half of the game was more even, but the Five Arches rink won comfortably by 25 shots to 11.

Ben and his rink of Roger, Tony and Steve had the opposite game to Gerald’s rink, Trailing by 10 shots to four at tea, the rink rallied and won the last nine ends to win by 18 shots to 13.

Finally out on rink five, Webby, ably supported by Ken, Bill and Simon, had a close fought battle with Geoff Hale’s Pendine rink. Two shots down at tea, they led by a solitary shot on the 19th end, only for the Pendine foursome to edge it over the last two ends to secure a 20 shots to 16 victory.

A great win for the Five Arches. I don’t think we have ever won at Pendine in the league before, perhaps the kick-start we need for this season.

Rink scores (Five Arches first, Pendine skips only):

Ken Lloyd, Bill Benham, Simon Evans, Jon Webb 16; G. Hale 20.

Viv John, Kevin Lewis, David Lloyd, Ashley Hooper 25; A. Edwards 11.

Roger Thomas, Tony Powling, Steve Davies, Ben Simmons 18; SK Thomas 13.

John Rees, Mike Day, Huw Nicholas, Gerald Hewitt 17; M. Evans 22.

Fishguard 58 (4 pts) Five Arches 70 (10)

In complete contrast to the previous day, this game was played in appalling weather, wet and windy, not the best conditions to play bowls, but the Five Arches battled through to another important victory.

Ashley, replacing holiday bound Ben, assisted by Roger, Tony and Steve, had a tightly fought contest on rink three. One shot separated the team at tea and with his last bowl, Fishguard skip Davo won the match for his rink by 17 shots to 16.

On the next rink, Gerald, backed up by Neil, Mike and John, mastered the conditions. Always in the lead, they eventually ran out comfortable winners by 18 shots to 11.

Unbeaten skip Dai returned to the fold and once again won. Well supported by Viv, Kev and David, they showed distain for the conditions to romp away by 24 shots to 14.

Out in the murk of rink six, Webby with Johnno, Ken and Simon had a close fought match once again. One shot behind with two ends to play, they just lost out to fine bowling by the home rink by 16 shots to 12.

Another fine away win; we have won three out of our first first away fixtures. Next up Whitland at home tomorrow (Saturday) at 1 pm.

Rink scores (Five Arches first, Fishguard skips only):

Roger Thomas, Tony Powling, Steve Davies, Ashley Hooper 16; D. Hughes 17.

John Rees, Mike Day, Neil Dickinson, Gerald Hewitt 18; T. Evans 11.

Viv John, Kevin Lewis, David Lloyd, Dai Spencer 24; M. Barringer 14

Ken Lloyd, Jon Hubbard, Huw Nicholas, Jon Webb 12; M. Bedford 16.

TENBY ARCHES

LADIES

‘I can’t stand the rain’, the classic song by Tina Turner, was on the lips of all the Tenby Arches Ladies last Sunday as it never stopped raining during their away fixture at Fishguard.

The game was in some doubt as the Fishguard captain wanted to call the game off, but as the men, who were also playing on the green, decided their game should go ahead, the ladies reluctantly followed suit.

The ladies agreed to a shortened game of 18 ends, but this was further reduced during the game to 15 ends at the request of the Fishguard captain as the green became dangerous, with ladies slipping and falling in the continuous downpour.

Helen’s rink of Meryl, Jan and Gerry managed to draw their game, but Alison and her rink of Lynn, Liz and Jo went down by five shots. This was not a game of finesse, but just bowl it as hard as you could and hope for the best.

The result was disappointing for the Arches Ladies, losing against Fishguard Ladies who could only put out two rinks of three players. The adjusted score was Fishguard 24 shots to the Arches Ladies’ 19, with just the one league point going to Tenby. This was a setback for our ladies, but they were just happy to get off the green and get into some dry clothes.

Tenby Arches Ladies are grateful for the continued support of Lesley, Martin and Kelly, of Tenby House.

Bowls Marathon

The 24-hour bowls marathon, due to take place this weekend, has been cancelled due to league and friendly commitments.
