Friendlies

It was a busy weekend on the immaculate Sutton Street green last weekend as Tenby teams opened up the new season with a couple of always popular friendly fixtures.

First up on Saturday was the visit of the Black Cats from Kidwelly, on their annual weekend tour to the area.

Friendships and rivalries were renewed, with the visitors eventually getting the upper hand to run out victors over their hosts’ combined Tenby/Five Arches team.

On Sunday, it was the the turn of the Five Arches, under new captain Viv John, to welcome Pendine to the green for their annual fixture, which alternates on a home and away basis each year.

As expected, it proved a closely fought tussle between two evenly matched sides, but on this occasion in was the Arches who eventually prevailed by a handful of shots.

No doubt it will be just as close when the two sides meet for real in the league later in the season.

Also played was the first ladies fixture of the season, a report of which follows:

Tenby Arches Ladies v Pembroke Dock Park

The first match of the season for Tenby Ladies was played on the Sutton Street green on a rather cool afternoon, and a cold wind made the conditions challenging, but it was good to greet our old friends again after a long winter. We were also delighted to have Alison and Helen back to play for us.

On rink five, the team of Katie, Liz, Jo and Alison got off to a slow start and were 14-0 down after seven ends. They then found their rhythm and won nine out of the next 13 ends, making them just one behind Pembroke Dock Park at the 20th end. The nailbiting finalé saw Pembroke Dock Park keep the two shots they were holding, and the game ended with a respectable score of 19 to Tenby, 22 to Pembroke Dock Park.

The team on rink six consisted of Lynn, Meryl, Jan and Helen. This game started off very close and the score was four-all after five ends. Tenby then went off the boil, losing six consecutive ends and giving Pembroke Dock Park an eight-shot lead at the halfway point. They made a comeback and managed to draw level at 12-all after 15 ends. Unfortunately, they could not maintain this and won only one of the last six ends, the final score being 17-13 to Pembroke Dock Park, so no points for Tenby.

Let’s hope the weather warms up a bit and we all have an enjoyable season.
