Tavernspite CP School's girls' Kwik Cricket team has been praised for their fantastic performance in the ECB National Kwik Cricket Finals at Leicester.

The team got through to the final match, and in a very competitive game against Oaktree Primary School from the East Midlands, just came up short by 20 runs.

"More than 3,000 schools participated in the regional competitions and for Tavernspite to finish runners-up is an incredible achievement," said Clr. Elwyn Morse, cabinet member for culture, sport and leisure.

Cricket development officer Matt Freeman said: "The girls had done exceptionally well and thoroughly deserve all the plaudits they receive for reaching the final of the national competition."

He added: "The competition was played indoors due to the weather and the girls had to adapt really quickly to indoor rules which was all very new to them."

Tavernspite's first game saw them beat the Old Hall School from East Midlands by two runs. In the second game, they lost to St. George's Primary School from West Midlands by four runs, and in the third game, they beat Ascot Heath Juniors from South by 50 runs.

They then qualified top of the group and played St. Paul's Primary School from the West Midlands in the semi final and defeated them by 50 runs, before proceeding to the final.

"With the U11 girls league newly-formed this year, all the girls that have participated in the Pembrokeshire schools competition have an exit route to a strong club set-up in the county and can continue to play and enjoy cricket," added Matt.

Tavernspite CP School also received a contribution from Pembrokeshire County Council to assist with the cost of the competition.
