The sun was shining this year on Span Arts' annual Big Plant Sale, as nearly 1,000 people turned out for one of the highlights of Narberth's social calendar.

Described as 'the start of the summer social season', the plant sale, held on Saturday at the Old School Playground, Town Moor, is the main fundraiser for Span Arts, the local live arts charity who put on events at the Queen's Hall and Dingle Club, as well as workshops across the county.

Featuring plants and trees, herbs and veggies plus much, much more from sellers far and wide, plus a popular new Kid's Zone, great food and a host of live music, the day was enjoyed by keen gardeners as well as people who just wanted to soak up the sun in family friendly surrounds.

Narberth Scouts also ran a delicious cake stall, raising over £200 for charity, £100 of which was donated to Span Arts. Local businesses donated prizes for The Big Green Raffle which took £200 on the day. Proceeds from the day totalled over £3k and Span Arts would like to thank everyone for helping make this a very good year!

Reach the Heights project

In addition to putting on events at the Queen's Hall, the annual Acapella Festival and the annual Plant Sale, Span Arts works hard in the background to deliver workshops across the county for children and young people who need it most.

Targetting young people at risk of becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training), Span Arts has secured European funding through the Reach the Heights initiative to deliver visual arts workshops at the autistic unit at Pembroke School, digital arts at the Hive Youth Centre in Garth, Haverfordwest and a music programme at the Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) in Neyland, Penally and SAGE, Pembroke.

The talented young people from the PRU in Neyland turned out at the plant sale to perform to perhaps their biggest audience yet! With the help from their talented tutors, Molara from Zion Train and Jez from Regime, the youngsters showed off their new talents on the guitar, bass and vocals. Reactions from the crowd was very positive with barely a dry eye in the house.
