After weeks of dry sunny weather, it seemed that our luck had truly deserted us. There was a weather warning in force for the whole of Saturday. However, the worst of the rain went through on Friday night and in Tenby at least it was drying up by 8 am. As we travelled north towards Cardigan, it was bright and sunny (writes P.M.). No-one had been put off by the gloomy weather forecast, so 32 people gathered for the walk around the Wildlife Centre at Cilgerran. When we arrived at our destination, Chris, the chair of the club committee, was waiting to greet us. He presented Barbara and Erica with gifts from the club in appreciation of their work on the committee. There was also an unusual item to be mentioned at the pre-walk briefing, tiny frogs! After issuing a warning to look out for frogs and on no account to tread on them, Paul led off the faster group with Val in support. Barbara led the much larger 'steady' group, supported by Brian, Erica and Janice. We made a clockwise circuit of the boardwalks round to the main path from Cardigan. The reeds were taller than the tallest walker and very wet if you strayed too close. It was all very atmospheric and made you feel like an extra in a re-make of the African Queen. When we checked the walk last week, the Teifi marshes were just banks of mud. But after a night's hard rain, the marshes were full of swirling muddy water. The resident water buffaloes seemed to enjoy splashing about in the chest deep water. We ventured into several of the hides, but the first couple yielded only swans, pigeons and mallards. The third hide, overlooking the Teifi, rewarded us with a small egret that obligingly fluttered back and forth, showing off its flying skills. The weather played tricks on us all the way. The weather traversed the scale of its summer offerings, from warm and sunny to torrential showers. We stopped and hurriedly donned coats when the rain came, but soon dried out when the sun re-appeared. Soon we were back at the top of the main path. The faster group turned left towards to the river for one final viewpoint, while the steady group headed straight for the visitor centre. The hardest decision of the day then had to be made. What to order from the café's menu of delicious offerings? After tasty refreshments, we took a group photo by the impressive wicker badger outside the visitor centre. Then refreshed and contented, we made our happy way home after another great club walk. Tomorrow (Saturday), there is a town walk led by Brian. Meet at the bus station in Park Road for a 10.30 am start. At the time of writing, refreshments have yet to be organised.
