Many people feel like a good stroll. Some like a challenging walk. But few would contemplate trekking to the South Pole. However, if you have the determination to become one of Pembrokeshire's most successful businessmen and your name is William McNamara OBE, this is something you take in your stride.
"I am 55 years old and have enjoyed good health all my life," said William, "so I decided to try to raise £100,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust to help some of those who have had theirs cruelly snatched away from them."
William outlined the preparation, the clothes and food required for the trip which coincided with Capt. Robert Falcon Scott's fateful journey 100 years ago in January 1912. Those in the audience were amazed at the conditions that William had to endure in a talk that was presented with considerable modesty. Winds of 100mph and temperatures below minus 40c were common and, accompanied by a single guide, he had to carry and pull all his supplies including a tent, food and cooking utensils.
William completed his amazing journey in January 2012 and has so far raised £30,000 towards his target. Presenting William with a cheque to help him reach his goal, president Graham Haddleton said: "This was a truly amazing achievement and we congratulate you for your courage and conviction."
