A young Tenby pupil is following in the footsteps of Sir Captain Tom Moore in honour of the fundraising feat achieved by the late veteran who took on a 100 laps of his garden for charity during the pandemic.
April 30 would have been Sir Tom’s 101st birthday and to honour him and his amazing achievements, everyone, of all ages and abilities, have been encouraged to take part in the ‘Captain Tom 100’ challenge.
For months seven-year-old Ronan Keohane from Tenby has been thinking up ideas from book writing to making keyrings to form his fundraising.
Last weekend his school challenged all the children with the ‘100 challenge’ and gave some inspiring ideas such as baking, drawing and other activities to really get the children involved.
Ronan decided that he would walk 100 miles to honour Sir Tom whilst raising money for his school by accepting donations using his just giving page and sponsorship forms.
As 100 miles is quite a journey for a young man, his walks are spread out over a month and after every walk he works out how many more miles he has left to go.
Ronan wants to raise a minimum of £200 for his school but with his charm and wit he has already exceeded half of his goal within 24 hours!
He chose his school, Tenby VC Church In Wales Primary to fundraise for as lockdown has been so hard on children.
“School is their form of normality and the teachers and staff have been so understanding with all the upset and change children have been facing,” explained Ronan’s mum Katie.
“With Covid restrictions still being present, the schools are unable to fundraise as much as they usually would as they can’t have discos, fetes and other events in the year due to social distancing, so Ronan has taken it upon himself to help out and hopefully if he raises enough and the lockdown rules ease, perhaps a disco for all the children can go ahead with some donations going towards party supplies!”
