After months of speculation, the Observer received confirmation yesterday (Thursday) that plans have been submitted for a new food store in Narberth.

County Councillor Wynne Evans said: "I can confirm the Co-op have gone public that they are the major retailer which intends to open a giant store on the old Brains Brewery site.

"The planning application has now been formally submitted and is live," he continued.

"The normal consultation planning process will now take place, with the plans possibly coming before the full county council planning committee on Tuesday, April 20."

Clr. Evans added: " I have visited a number of the Co-op's outlets across South Wales in the last few weeks,  and this huge investment in Narberth economy is a giant boost when many others towns are suffering at the hands of the recession."

Clr. Evans said that up to 44 full-time jobs, together with numerous part-time positions will be offered as the Spring Gardens premises, as well as a number of instore services.

And he confirmed that contrary to speculation, it will not be a 24-hour opening store, but will have extended hours, as well as 54 two hour free parking spaces.

In addition, Clr. Evans confirmed that two other major high street brands have had their agents in town earlier this week.

"I hope further positive news on the jobs front will come over the course of the next 10 weeks," Clr. Evans concluded.

As we were going to press yesterday (Thursday), Pembrokeshire County Council confirmed that they had received a full planning application for a retail food store.

A spokeswoman for The Co-operative said: "The Co-operative has agreed terms to occupy a new 10,000-square foot food store in Narberth and is supporting the planning application made by Actoris. However it is still in the early stages of the process."
