As previously reported, the death occurred peacefully at Park House Court Nursing Home, Tenby, on Sunday, August 20, of Mr. Gerald Scourfield, aged 96, of Haven Park Close, Haverfordwest, and formerly of Tenby.
A native of Stepaside, Gerald left school at the age of 14 and was apprenticed in the haberdashery department of T.P. Hughes and Son, Tenby. He left to serve in the RAF as an aircraft fitter for five years, stationed in Kenya, West Africa. On his return, he became part of the sales force at T.P. Hughes and Son, becoming furniture manager. In 1967, he was appointed general manager of T.P. Hughes and Son, Haverfordwest, until his retirement in 1982. He said of his 47 years service, “I couldn’t have worked for a better firm.”
His main interests were fishing, gardening, collecting jokes and playing games with family. He was also a faithful member of the Wesley Methodist Church in Tenby and Haverfordwest, and then Albany Church, serving in many capacities, including Sunday School superintendent and society steward. He was an active member in Tenby Masonic Lodge.
After retirement, he supported his wife Betty as she became national treasurer of Townswomen’s Guild, culminating in his attendance at a Buckingham Palace Garden Party and meeting Princess Anne on several occasions.
Predeceased by his wife Betty in 2003, family left to mourn are Vivienne Elborne (only daughter), Francis Elborne (son-in-law), Sian Greenwood and husband Martin, Daniel Elborne and fiancée Chrystal (grandchildren), Zachary, Graham, Luke Greenwood and Daniel Elborne (great-grandchildren), Stephen John (nephew) and partner Mary, Ann (niece) and husband Philip Lewis, Robert Williams (nephew) and partner Mari.
A casket spray of flowers was placed on the grave of the late Gordon and Gwyneth John.
The funeral service took place at Albany Church, Haverfordwest, on Thursday, August 31, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, Narberth.
Officiating was the Rev. Hugh-John Wilson, while bearers were Graham Thomas, Terry Brace, Dorian Evans and Daniel Treharne.
Donations in lieu of flowers, if so desired, may be made for the British Deaf Association, c/o E. C. Thomas and Son, Funeral Directors, Zoar Chapel Funeral Home, Llanteg, Narberth, who conducted the funeral arrangements.
