Mrs. E. M. STIELER
Tenby
Enid Myfanwy Stieler, aged 90, of Park Lane Apartments, Tenby, previously of Bronwydd, Corris, with family and friends by her side, passed away peacefully on the afternoon of Thursday, January 19, at Belmont Court Nursing Home, Tenby.
After many months of illness, Enid succumbed to the effects of chronic heart and lung disease compounded by recent onset dementia.
Though born in the South Wales coal mining village of Llanhileth, Enid spent most of her childhood in Southall, West London.
In her early adult years, Enid left her secretarial position and moved with her parents, Islwyn and Eva Rees, and elder brother Alan, to the slate mining village of Corris, in North Wales where her parents took over the running of the Braich Goch Hotel.
It was here that Enid met her husband Siegfried ‘Steve’ Stieler, raised their two children, Karen and Mark, and became a supportive and resourceful member of the community.
Over the decades living in Corris, Enid provided hairdressing and dressmaking services to the villagers and also ran a guest house catering for tourists and long-term lodgers, many of whom have remained close friends until the present day.
Notably, through the Women’s Institute organisation, Enid toured the Mid-Wales area pioneering and promoting healthy eating habits, particularly of raw foods, an alien concept at the time, but which is now taken for granted.
Following the death of her husband, Enid moved to Tenby over 20 years ago to be close to her daughter and family.
Whenever reflecting on her life and sharing stories, Enid’s glass was always half full.
Living through the London Blitz appeared to have been a simple annoyance; in most stories there was usually humour and gratitude despite the obvious hardships.
Her life will be remembered for her wisdom, humility, hard work, sacrifice, patience and love for family and God.
Enid is survived by her two children and their spouses, five grandchildren, one great-grandchild and the ever-supportive church family at St. Teilo’s Catholic Church, Tenby.
A requiem mass will be held at St. Teilo’s Catholic Church, Tenby, at 10 am, on Wednesday, February 1. Burial will take place at Holy Trinity Church, Corris, at 12 noon, Thursday, February 2. Both services will be followed by refreshments.
Family flowers only. Donations, in lieu of flowers, towards the Paul Sartori Foundation are welcome. These can be presented to Rossiter and Sons Ltd, funeral directors, The Old Rectory, The Norton, Tenby, tel. (01834) 843160.
MRS. P. M. Codd, Manorbier
Pamela Mary Codd (nee Raybould), of Manorbier, died peacefully after a very short illness at home on January 12. She was aged 69.
Pam originated from Sutton Coldfield in Warwickshire. Her father was a scientist with the Coal Board, and gave evidence to the Aberfan Enquiry.
As a young girl, she was accepted by the Royal School of Ballet, but unfortunately grew too tall.
The family used to have many family holidays in Pembrokeshire.
On leaving school, she worked at Barclays Bank, until she married her husband Gerald, a civil engineer, in 1968. They moved around the country until they settled in Leicestershire, where they stayed for 25 years. They did not have any children, although there were numerous nephews and nieces.
Pamela began studying and achieved an Honours Degree in English from Loughborough University, and was organiser of Scope, the English department’s poetry group.
After a year, Pam opened Codd’s Bookshop in Loughborough. This was successful, but was sold in 1997 when Gerald took early retirement, and they moved to Manorbier.
Pam became secretary of Manorbier Church PCC and also treasurer of Manorbier Church Restoration Group. She continued her interest in bookselling by running the church bookshop, and the bookstall at the fete in the castle.
As an avid reader, Pam was a member of Manorbier Book Club, and was also interested in theatre and history. For a few years, she worked as an assistant librarian at Haverfordwest Library.
Pam had been adopted as a baby by the Raybould family, and after her parents and brother had died, she eventually decided to find her birth family. Her mother was already dead, but she found an aunt and uncle, and also a half-brother, Richard, who was living in Essex.
After Pam had found him, he decided to search for his father, who turned out to be Iain Bell, from St. Brides Hotel, Saundersfoot, then deceased. However, he found his half-sister Gillian, who became firm friends with Pam. She enjoyed the last 13 years of her life with her new found family.
She leaves to mourn her husband Gerald, her sister Joyce Checketts and nieces Helen and Becky, her sister-in-law Wendy Raybould and nephews William and Tom, her cousin Dorothy, husband Martin and children Kathryn and Euan, her niece Michele Heath, husband David and children, her niece Katie, husband Trevor and children, half-brother Richard and wife Annie and children Jamie Dan and Ben, eight other nephews and nieces from her husband’s family, and her half-brother’s half-sister Gillian Grundy (nee Bell).
