MR. L. EVANS
PENALLY
Mr. Lloyd Evans, Penally Court Farm, passed away peacefully on July 20. He was 77.
Lloyd had suffered with non-Hodgkin lymphoma for many years, but continued to live a positive, full and active life.
Born on August 22, 1938, at Kilawen Farm, near Saundersfoot, brother to Vernon and the now late Kenneth and Valerie, not long after, Lloyd moved with his parents Daisy and Laurie to Penally and he took over Court Farm in 1994.
Lloyd met Ann, his wife, at the then Tenby Young Farmers Club, where they shared a passion for horses, both being accomplished riders, who were involved in local point-to-point and flapping races. Lloyd and Ann married on January 13, 1961, at Penally Church.
Lloyd had a detailed knowledge of horse lineage and enjoyed sharing this with many friends during his travels to race courses all over the UK. In particular, he enjoyed following the career of his granddaughter Charlotte, who became Welsh Ladies Champion Jockey in 2016.
Known as ‘the Doc’, he was a vociferous ‘Crow’, and together with family, Lloyd ran the farm and associated caravan and camping site.
Many of the site visitors went on to become personal friends, staying at Penally for over 40 years and participating in his legendary birthday parties.
Outside of farming, Lloyd was best known for his involvement in rugby. Initially he gained Welsh Youth representative honours and went on to play for Llanelli until a knee injury curtailed his first class playing career.
Lloyd made nearly 300 appearances over 20 seasons for Tenby United RFC and was honoured to be club captain in 1963.
Lloyd was described as a fierce flanker who protected the younger players and he won 10 league and eight knockout cup titles.
He later coached the youth side, became club chairman and was an inaugural founder member of the club supporters committee.
The funeral and celebration of his life was held at St. Mary’s Church, Tenby, and Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, and was principally conducted by the Rev. Canon Andrew Grace.
Following the funeral, refreshments were taken at Tenby United clubhouse. The very large and representative gathering at all venues bore testament to the high regard in which Lloyd was held.
During the service, a eulogy was delivered by Richard Ormond (family friend).
Bearers were William and Cai Evans (grandsons), Richard Lewis, Iwan Griffiths, Hugh Scale and Andrew Brace (family friends).
Principal mourners were Ann (wife), Vernon (brother), Carl and Janina, Chris, and Karen, Mike and Julie, and Paddy and Anna (sons and daughters-in-law), Charlotte, Katie, Cai and fiancèe Michelle, Olwen, Mabli, Madoc, William and Lucy and husband Dan (grandchildren), along with numerous other relatives and friends.
There were family tributes only and donations in lieu in memory for the Injured Jockeys Fund and Cancer Treatment (Local) will continue to be taken and can be made c/o E. C. Thomas and Son, Funeral Directors, Zoar Chapel Funeral Home, Llanteg, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.
