The death occurred peacefully at home on Sunday, March 27, of Jill Hughes, aged 77 years.

Jill was born at Swallowtree Gardens, Saundersfoot. She attended St. Teilo’s Convent and Greenhill Grammar Schools.

When she left school, she was employed as secretary at the Imperial Hotel, then the Tenby Observer offices and later at the Forestry Commission Office, Minwear.

Together with her partner, Peter, she ran a successful bed and breakfast business and tearooms at Caldey View, St. Julian’s Street, Tenby.

Jill will be remembered for her beautiful smile, kindness, sense of humour, quirky ideas, her love and artistic flair for gardening and cooking.

The funeral took place on Thursday, April 7, at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, officiated by Mike Ashbridge, humanist celebrant.

Bearers were Martin and Peter Hughes (sons), Liam Ridgway, Chris Hughes and Tim Hopkinson (grandsons) and Nigel Walters (brother).

Principal mourners were Peter Dickenson (partner), Penny Brace (daughter), Martin and Hazel Hughes (son and daughter-in-law), Sarah and Charles Hopkinson (daughter and son-in-law) Peter and Jennifer Hughes (son and daughter-in-law), Liam and Beth Ridgway, Lucy and Gavin Davies, Megan Brace and Luca, Emily Brace and Paul, Claire Hughes and Guy, Rachel Hughes, Tim Hopkinson and Gemma, Hannah Hopkinson, Chris Hughes and Gemma, Amy Hughes (grandchildren and partners), Nigel Walters and Judy (brother and partner), together with a gathering of extended family and friends too numerous to mention. Unable to attend were Jill’s great-grandchildren - Dylan, Harry and Tom, Breagh and Romi, and Abby.

Very peacefully with the family, at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, on Monday evening, April 11, Barbara Ann, aged 84 years, of Douglas James Way, Haverfordwest.

Beloved wife of Ken and the late Colwyn Mason, dear mother of Hugh, Wendy, Mandy and the late Barrie, loving grandmother and great-grandmother and cherished sister.

Funeral today (Friday, April 22), public service at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, 1 pm.

Begelly

Stanley Michael John Hutchings, known to many as Stan or ‘Stan the man,’ passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 14, five days before his 68th birthday. He was a very hard working, loyal man and very much loved by all.

Husband to Antoinette, son to Gwen Hutchings and the belated Stan Hutchings. Brother to Anne Allen and a father to Nina and Graham. He was a father figure to his grandson Craig Reeves, as well as a granddad, to Mariska, Iestyn and Nico Hutchings. He will be very much missed by everyone.

The funeral will take place on Friday, May 6, when a service at St. Mary’s Church, Tenby, at 11 am, will be followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, Narberth, at 12.15 pm.

MISS M. BALL

PEMBROKE DOCK

As previously reported, the death occurred peacefully at Withybush General Hospital, Haverfordwest, on Tuesday, March 22, of Miss Marlene Ball, of 28 Munro Court, Pembroke Dock. She was aged 77.

A native of the town, she had various jobs in younger life as a cleaner and in retail establishments, but was a full-time mother and wife mainly.

Among her main interests were gardening, shopping, bingo, spending time with her dogs and family, and anything to do with animals.

Family left to mourn are Julie (daughter), Marc (son), Kelly and Gareth, Natasha and Toby (granddaughters and partners), Dylan and Jack (great-grandchildren), Malcolm and Marion, Garfield and Pam (brothers and sisters-in-law), along with various nephews and nieces.

The funeral took place on Monday, April 4, at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth.

Officiating was Rev. Paul Nash, while bearers were Gareth Thomas, Toby Credland, Fred John, Marcus Ball, Billy Jones and Brian Larkin.

MRS. M. J. LEWTAS

PEMBROKE

As previously reported, the death occurred peacefully on Saturday, March 5, of Mrs. Marie Joyce Lewtas, aged 73, of 11 Strongbow Walk, Pembroke.

A native of Pembroke Dock, when she left school she worked at Humbers in the town, then at Davies Steel, before moving to Salford in 1962 after getting married, She then worked at Greengate and Irwell, while in later years was employed at the Lion and at Dave and Helen’s Newsagents, Pembroke.

Among her main interests were baking and sewing; she used to make lovely toys for her children and grandchildren when they were young.

Family left to mourn are William (husband), William and Philip (sons), Jill (daughter-in-law), Samantha and Dion (grandchildren), David and Gwyneth (brother and sister-in-law), Libby (sister), Alan (brother), Paul and Pippa (brother and sister-in-law), Janice and Dietmar (sister and brother-in-law), Pam (sister) and many nephews and nieces.

The funeral took place at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, on Wednesday, March 16.

Officiating was Rev. H. Cale, while bearers were William Lewtas, Philip Lewtas, Martin Studley and Paul Lloyd.

MR. B. WEBB

TAVERNSPITE

Mr. Barry Webb passed away at home surrounded by his family, on March 9. He was 79.

He was born in Hanwell, London, before moving to Hatch End in his early years. He then moved to Willow Farm, Weybread, in Norfolk in 1947, where he attended Bungay Grammar School and worked on the farm with his family until he was 13 years-old. Then in 1950, the family moved to Craig-y-Dyfor Farm, near Tavernspite, where he completed his education at Tavernspite School, also working on the farm.

He lived there with his parents Reg and May and brothers Brian and Peter until 1961, when the farm was sold to Alec and Cynthia Vedeniapine, who gave Barry great support during the time he worked for them.

In 1968, Barry and Ivy, with their sons Paul and David, moved to Tavernspite and started Fuchsia Nurseries, now known as Tavernspite Garden Centre.

He became chairman of Whitland Young Farmers around 1954 and married Ivy from Penderry in 1958. In the same year, he carried the Commonwealth Games baton, as he was a keen runner, representing Pembrokeshire Youth Club in running the mile. He felt very honoured to be asked to carry the baton again in 2014 in St. Davids.

He also played football for Amroth Seagulls and Kilgetty and in later years Barry also played cricket for Whitland. He became second team captain, groundsman, chairman and president, finishing his cricketing career at 70 years of age for Crymych.

Whitland Male Voice Choir became a big part of his life for over 30 years. He was also chairman and enjoyed travelling around the country singing and making friends where ever he went.

Barry leaves to mourn his wife Ivy, Paul and David (sons), Janice and Jenny (daughters-in-law), Robert, Matthew, Timothy, Tomas, Jac and Alys (grandchildren), Emily (Robert’s girlfriend) Brian and Joan, Peter and Doreen (brothers and sisters-in-laws).

The funeral was held at Carvan Chapel, Tavernspite, on March 19, where a large congregation assembled.

Officiating at the service were Rev. Hywel Brown, Rev. Geoffrey Morris and Rev. Arwyn Evans, while Whitland Male Voice Choir sang There is a Green Hill Far Away, Morte Christe, Anthem from Chess and Calon Lan. The choir was conducted by Juliette Rossiter and the organist was Heffina Jones.

A poem was read on behalf of the grandchildren, entitled Grandad’s Garden.

Bearers were Richard Lewis, Mike Williams, John Davies, Martin Davies (choir members), Gwyn Phillips and Ali Geran (friends).

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Ken Davies and Son, of Clunderwen, who are collecting the donations for Prostate Cancer Research in lieu of flowers.

Peacefully on Thursday, April 7, at Woodfield, Nursing Home, Narberth, Herbert (Kleeneeze), of Bro Waldo, Clunderwen, formerly of Beag Cottages, Llandissilio.

Beloved husband of Rosina, dear father of Huw and Geraint, respected father-in-law of Andrea, loving grandfather and great-grandfather and cherished brother of Erol and the late Eileen and Avril.

Funeral service took place at Rhydwilym Chapel, Clunderwen, on Saturday, April 16.

MRS. A. PHILLIPS

KILGETTY

As previously reported, the death occurred peacefully at her home with family on Wednesday, March 16, of Mrs. Arfona Phillips, of Carmarthen Road, Kilgetty.

Sged 81, she worked at the Post Office, Mini Market, New Hedges, for 26 years, before her retirement in 1995.

As well as her family, among her main interests was dancing. She also played darts for the ladies team at the RAOB, Kilgetty, for 20 years before ill-health prevailed.

Predeceased by her husband Ivor, son-in-law Clive and grandson Gavin, family left to mourn are Lorraine (daughter), Godfrey and Susan (son and daughter-in-law), Terina and Phil (granddaughter and husband), Jodie and Stuart (granddaughter and partner), James and Linzi (grandson and wife), Emily and Charlotte (granddaughters), Jasey, Sonny, Cobyn and Toddy (great-grandsons), Valerie and Ellis (sister and brother-in-law), Molly and Dot (sisters-in-law unable to attend), plus nephews, nieces, relatives and friends too numerous to mention.

There was a large gathering for the funeral and celebration service at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, on Wednesday, March 30.

Officiating was Rev. Huw George, while bearers were Geoffrey, Byron, Rowland and Quentin Mansell (nephews).

The death occurred at her home in Kilgetty, on Sunday, April 17, of Miss Francis Rowena Badham, known to all as Rowena. She was aged 86.

Miss Badham is survived by her brothers and sisters Brinley, Marjorie, Connie and Winston and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral service takes place on Thursday, April 28, 12.15 pm, at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth.

As reported previously, the death occurred peacefully on Tuesday, April 12, at Pencoed Residential Home, Wooden, of Mr. Arthur Gwynne Llewellyn, affectionately known as ‘Little Gwynne,’ aged 89 years.

Gwynne will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.
