A tribute to

Dr. W. F. Thomas

1930 - January 19, 2016

Dr. W. Fred Thomas went to Greenhill Grammar School, Tenby from 1943 to 1950. We were in the sixth science form together with Fred Rose, Bryn Rees, Noel Wayne, to name a few. Fred went to University College Cardiff in 1950 when after his degree he proceeded to his doctorate. His researches and conclusions in this PhD is what I wanted to note down so that the people who knew him socially, and in the Harbour in Tenby, may be aware of his achievements and subsequent influence.

His research was into the properties of glass fibre. This was in the 1950s. Being very precise and thorough in his research, he found that the method he used for making glass fibre produced mechanical strength which was way above what the five previous workers in the field had produced. His research wasn’t believed; and questioned. However, he persisted and not only was proved and accepted as being correct, but also found the reason why.

Other researchers’ methods had produced fibre with micro cracks on the surface, and these weakened the tensile strength. There was one other thing, it was realised that these micro cracks caused a loss of signal when light was sent down the fibre. By using Fred Thomas’s method of making glass fibre, signals could be sent for miles. It is this discovery that Fred’s research helped with today’s fibre internet connections.

So next time you are on the internet, think of and thank the thoroughness of Fred Thomas’s research, native of Tenby.

Peter Davies,

Ex Saundersfoot.
