As previously reported, the death occurred peacefully at Withybush Hospital, on Sunday, November 1, of Mrs. Iris White, of Lady Park, Tenby. She was aged 84.

Iris was born to the late Lenard and Lillian Wheatley on November 7, 1930, at Winsom Street, Birmingham. She had an elder sister Dorothy.

Iris met David following his leaving Freshwater East to serve his electrical apprenticeship with the GEC in Birmingham. They were married on June 9, 1951, at Erdington Parish Church, Birmingham. Iris and David moved to Tenby in 1953 when David returned to his native Pembrokeshire and he secured a position with South Wales Electricity Board, after completing his studies.

Her life centred mainly around her family and supporting David in his many interests. They lived firstly at Wynmead, Marsh Road, then in 1964 moved to Lady Park to the house which was built by David and the late Wallace Howells. She remained there until her admission to hospital on October 19.

Before starting her family, she was employed as a clerk by Tenby Coachworks and the borough treasurer’s office in Tenby.

She took a keen interest in the Guide movement, being treasurer of the Local Association and helping out at many events connected with the Brownies and Guides. She was one of the founder members of New Hedges Short Mat Bowls Club, a member of New Hedges Women’s Institute for over 30 years, and also served on the local Tenovus committee. She was also a faithful member of Ebenezer Cold Inn Baptist Chapel.

During David’s retirement they enjoyed holidays abroad - walking in Austria and Switzerland, visits to the Far and Middle East, Canada, Norway and nearer to home Ireland, Scotland and mid and north Wales.

During the funeral service at Cold Inn, a moving eulogy was read by her nephew Robert Wilde surrounding the life that he shared with his Aunt and family members.

Predeceased by her husband David in March 2009, family left to mourn are Rosalind, Caroline and Steve (daughters), Graham and Christine (son), grandsons Gareth and Rachel, Mark and Heather, Ryan and Dylan, granddaughter Ceri and great-granddaughter Isabella, nephews and nieces, Robert and Christine, Martin and Gill, Nigel and Jayne, Priscilla and Gerald, Michael and Yvonne, also great-nieces and nephews too numerous to mention.

Officiating at the funeral service at Cold Inn Baptist Chapel, on November 12, was Pastor Craig Gove, while bearers were grandchildren Gareth and Mark Brewin, Ryan and Dylan White.

The service was followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, Narberth, with the ashes being interred at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Pembroke, with her late husband David.

MS K. J. HARRISON

MANCHESTER

(formerly of Tenby)

As previously reported, the death occurred peacefully at University Hospital of South Manchester on Tuesday, December 22, of Ms Kathryn Jane Harrison, formerly of Tenby. She was 52.

Kath was born July 9, 1963, in South Pembs Hospital, Pembroke Dock, being the second daughter of Kathleen Harrison (nee Williams) and Elwyn (Taff) Harrison and sister to Jackie.

The Harrison family moved to Auralia, Trefloyne Lane and York House, Lower Frog Street. After leaving Greenhill School, Tenby, Kath went to Plymouth University where she graduated with a BSC in Psychology. After university, she returned to Tenby for a short time, working as a reporter for the Tenby Observer.

She also had a passion for horses and in her younger days spent many weekends and holidays working at Norchard Riding Stables at Manorbier.

But much as Kath loved Tenby, the world was a big place which she intended to explore and she secured a job working for the Government at the headquarters of the Property Services Agency in Croydon, Surrey. Kath threw herself into all aspects of her new life, gaining promotion, getting involved with the Trade Union and was, of course, at the heart of a lively social life.

Whilst in Croydon she met Neil, to whom she was briefly married. They moved to Manchester, where Kath secured yet another high-flying post as executive assistant to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Manchester, a position she held for several years, before becoming school manager at the Manchester School of Engineering.

Kath took early retirement from the university to manage aspects of a sensor and instrumentation import and sales company called GST, which was run from her home in Bolton with her then partner, Andrew.

Kath loved to travel and had a particular passion for the Far East. The food, the people, the culture. She travelled there extensively in her role as executive assistant and thereafter even more so for the import company, GST. She had been to all the Far Eastern countries, from Malaysia to Vietnam and from China to Thailand. She also enjoyed many holidays in Italy, another country held very dear to her, Dubai, Australia, and of course not forgetting Benidorn!

Kath was an amazing, intelligent, witty, warm, kind individual who left us far too soon.

A Humanist service will be conducted on Saturday, January 23, at 12.15 pm, at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth. Dress code is informal, with those attending being asked to wear anything they feel comfortable in.

MRS. N. TURTON

TENBY

Formerly of Leeds, Cawdor Court, Narberth, and latterly Park House Court Nursing Home, Tenby, Nellie Turton, also known to family and friends as Helen, passed away peacefully at Park House Court on December 25. She was 95.

Dearly loved wife of the late David Turton, she leaves to mourn her sister Alice; only son Christopher and daughter-in-law Tracey; grandchildren, Victoria, William and Rose; great-grandchildren Loelle and Harry; nephews and nieces, and friends at Park House Court.

Helen was born into a family of eight children in Leeds in 1920. She is survived by her sister Alice, of Redwick, Monmouthshire. Her siblings Wilfred, Bert, Jack, John, Ann and Ada had pre-deceased her.

Helen spent her early years in difficult times having been born shortly after the end of WWI.

At 18, she attended the ‘101 dance club’ in Leeds and met her eventual husband David Turton. No sooner had they fallen in love and started to make plans for a life together, WWII began and they were parted for six long years.

David served with the 8th Army in North Africa, then Italy, and was wounded, but recuperated overseas and returned to service with his regiment.

At home, Helen served in the ‘Land Army’ and the city girl really did not feel happy, so changed to work underground in incredibly dangerous conditions, filling heavy artillery shells with explosives for the British forces at war.

As hostilities ended, David returned to Leeds and proposed immediately and Helen married her beloved husband in Leeds on September 1, 1945. They had one child, Christopher. Helen remained devoted to David until David’s death in 2001.

Helen was an ‘old fashioned’ family person, whose ambition was to see her family happy and successful. She supported her late husband in his job, but stayed at home to bring up her son, rather than a career of her own - although she was an accomplished tailoress.

Whilst living in the Leeds area, Helen was an active member of the Salvation Army in Morley, Leeds.

On one occasion, she, along with a number of colleagues, were invited to the Royal Albert Hall to give an exhibition of what was to become ‘Rhythmic Gymnastics’. She was in her 60s at this event.

Later, Helen’s son Christopher had a new career opportunity in Alicante, Spain. Now without David, Helen decided to emigrate with her growing family in 2002 aged 82!

She spent several happy years, meeting new friends and enjoying life in the sun.

When the time was right to return home to Britain, Helen wanted to live in Narberth.

She spent three happy years there in her cosy flat at Cawdor Court, until her health suffered and she moved into Park House Court as a resident.

She enjoyed her time there, made some lovely friends and enjoyed the exceptional devoted and professional care of the staff.

Helen’s funeral is to be held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, at 11.30 on Monday, January 11.

Information regarding the funeral service may be obtained from Peter Evans, Funeral Directors, Laugharne (tel: 01994 427261)
