A large audience, mainly visitors from abroad, filled St Mary’s Church last Thursday evening (June 20) to enjoy hearing Tenby Male Choir in concert.

With Miranda Morgan at the piano and musical director – Ian Williams leading the choir they sang all the firm favourites, much to the delighted to an appreciative audience.

The concert, which was sponsored by the Park Hotel, Tenby heard Rachie, Shenandoah, Climb Every Mountain. Then came Hallelujah, which was written by Canadian – Leonard Cohen and pleased the visitors from Canada.

The choir finished the first section with African Prayer, which then brought soloist Paul Varallo to the fore singing two interesting songs.

The first was ‘Tell My Father’ from the musical about the American Civil War and next was ’Come Back to Sorrento’ in which Paul told the audience about his visit to southern Italy and tracing his family roots.

Tenby Male Choir returned to perform their second section. They sang Deus Selutis (Llef) followed by Let it be Me and then Working Man. From the musical Les Miserables – Bring Him Home received warm applause and although there was a visitor from North Yorkshire the story behind – My Grandfather’s Clock – was still neccesary, however, the audience really enjoyed taking part.

Paul Varallo sang again after the break. From ’Empire in the Sun’ he delighted the visitors with Suo Gan and then the ’Holy City’.

He then went on to say that he was again running the Cardiff Half Marathon in October with all proceeds going to Cancer Research Wales.

The choir’s final section included Take me Home followed by Benedictus and from the musical ‘Chess’ the evocative song – Anthem.

Two guests joined the choir for the singing of the American Trilogy which ended with organ playing by John Harrison. It brought the concert to a great end.
