A campsite in Pembrokeshire is among the latest businesses to achieve the international Green Key award.

Green Key is the fastest-growing eco-label awarded to more than 2,800 hospitality providers in 57 countries worldwide. In Wales, Green Key is operated by Keep Wales Tidy, who also manage the iconic Blue Flag programme.

Since it launched in Wales in 2015, Green Key has gained interest on a national scale. Now, nine new businesses across the country have reached the high standards needed to be awarded Green Key accreditation.

They include Trevayne Farm Caravan and Camping at New Hedges.

Rosie Abbott from Trevayne Farm said: “Trevayne has always held sustainability as one of its core values, focusing on a multifaceted approach. Our methods to maintain a sustainable campsite include providing customers with a user-friendly recycling and compost area, we have systems in place to help reduce water waste from toilets, showers and sinks and encourage our customers to switch off and enjoy their natural surroundings.

“We also have a farm shop on site which sells locally sourced produce, in this area we have reverted to using glass for milk and drinks, have a refillable water filling station and have stopped the use of plastic bags.

“We aim to keep developing Trevayne to be as sustainable as possible and are proud to be awarded a Green Key by Keep Wales Tidy.”

In addition, Manorbier B&B in Pembrokeshire has continued improving on its sustainability and is celebrating Green Key accreditation for the third consecutive year.

Businesses throughout the sector are eligible to apply for Green Key. This includes bed and breakfasts, hotels, self-catering accommodation, camp sites, conference centres, restaurants and attractions.

Lesley Jones, chief executive for Keep Wales Tidy, said: “We’d like to congratulate all of our new Green Key businesses on their success. We’ve seen mounting concern over recent months about the damage that’s being caused to our natural environment, so it’s important to recognise and celebrate Welsh businesses that are taking the lead on sustainability.

“Green Key provides an opportunity to put Wales on the map as a 21st century, sustainable destination. It’s reassuring to know that when you choose to visit a Green Key site, you’re visiting a place that is committed to caring for our environment.”
